Question about Helle knives.

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a Helle Viking knife, honestly because I just thought it looked cool. I just received it and it’s a bit off center. It’s centered at the top but not the bottom where they rounded the handle down.

Is this something that is really common and I just have to live with, with this knife in particular or should I return it and try another. I literally love everything else about the knife’s look and feel. I’m just a little ocd, I guess. What are your guys opinion who own any Helle knives. I’m really new to collecting knives so would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Can you post an image from a hosted site?

I've found that many Scandinavian knives have some personality or slight anomalies over the years. But it would be safer to opine if we could see an image of what you are referring to.

Ok I feel silly. I don’t know how to share the photo I took from my iPhone. Nothing pulls up when I hit the little camera on the forum page.

You'll have to use a photo hosting service like the free one here: https://imgbb.com/

Then once you upload there, you can link to the image.

You need to post the pic on the 3rd party site like imgur or whatever and copy the url code. They come back here and click the little picture icon between the smiley face and the film strip and post that url in there.

I have a Helle Viking and about another dozen old and new Helle knives. IMHO among the best Nordic knives around. Love the laminated steel like the Viking. Well made and if properly Scandi sharpened, cut like the dickens and hold their edge forever.

From Helle Viking from Ragnar's website.

My only Helle at the moment:

Let’s see if this works

Think it worked this time. It’s just slightly to the left of the handle. I don’t know if it would effect the use at all. Just noticed it when inspecting it.

I agree - "Won't effect the use at all". However, as much I like Helle ... every one I've had has had some 'issue' that I just couldn't get on with... so I have let them all go.

Personal choice ultimately - if you can live with it, use it and enjoy :) ... simples

Remember, the Viking model is representative of Nordic knives from pre-medieval times. I doubt early Viking peoples worried a lot about perfect aesthetics, only that the knife would cut (what ever or who ever). ;)

Cool. Thanks for the advice everyone. I feel a little better knowing it won’t effect the use. I think I can probably get over it, but we’ll see. I really do appreciate all the help though. Thanks again everyone!

In the end all that matters is how you feel about it. I wouldn’t fault you for needing it centered (and sending it back), that said it really builds character to decide to just get over things.
It might even work better if you are right handed because the edge will be right under where your thumb connects.

Most likely be fine. But if your not happy send it back for exchange. My first nice fixed blade was a Helle Eagan. You can see the handle is not perfect. Not the chip. That was my work. Had it more than 10 years. No problem with it.

Nice! Glad it’s still going strong.

Helle is a house brand that focuses on working knives. They do all their knives , and sheathes, in house. They actually cater to the working people, not so much to the picky collectors. So, yes, here you are, with a knife that puts you off, a bit. A bit much, even. Take solace in that you have a solid knife that will work you through all knife tasks. If you have knife tasks at hand, that is. Otherwise, maybe it's just not a brand for you. They stand behind their products, so I assume a payback is not excluded.

I've had my eye on the Viking for a while -- love the look, the simplicity and the history behind that knife. The slight offset just makes it unique IMHO and won't affect its performance at all.
