Okay, I just talked to a guy who won't give me a straight answer about his long pinky nail is uncut. He said coke was a stupid habit, and he probably doesn't do, but I can't be sure.
Also, why would males, especially urbanites keep their fingernails long?
Is it a drug thing, or a lazy thing or a fashion thing or what?
Thanks.
(If this is the wrong forum, please move to the Cove, sorry and thanks!)

i think he's just referring to the pinky finger. i've seen this before.

if he's asian, it may be a cultural thing, for good luck or wealth or something. that's what i've heard.

Very true statement. I (am filipino) remember my grandfather having one thumbnail longer than the rest and filed to a subtle point. Used the nail for a host of things, like a mini screwdriver, booger scooper- he even examined the booger up to the light, I kid you not- picker upper, mini scraper, toothpick, ear pick, really all sorts of things. More utilitarian than good luck charm though.

He's not into drugs, as far as I can remember!:D

I was wondering the same thing about a middle-eastern co-worker. One very long pinky nail, normally kept out-of-sight but occationally obvious. Coke? Ethnic? Utilitarian? I don't actually care enough to ask him about it, but since you brought it up...

Actually, this person was hispanic. Puerto Rican, I think.
But I'm talking about any or all people in general. If it's cultural, I'm still interested in finding out. Thanks.

The only people I've ever met that kept a long pinky finger nail used it as a coke spoon.

with some folks its drug connected, some folks its a cultural thing, some folks do it too look "cool" and some probably dont know why they do it, maybe lazy lol.

hispanic i would say drug or gang related, only he knows for sure though.

tells ya a lot huh?

I don't know about any Asian customs but all the American people I have ever seen with a long pinky nail used it for cocaine. Although that trend has died out quite a bit since the 80s-early 90s. It is quite common for black men to grow all of their nails long as a sign they are "men of leisure" which translates to pimp. The idea is they have women to do any manual labor for them so the nails are long and manicured as a symbol that they never have to get their hands dirty.

I keep both my pinky nails long.

Find them very, very useful more often than I could say.

(And no, I don't use cocaine.)

I make sure and keep mine long enough to detect edge burrs (not on the pinky though).

Hi rifon-

What is a typical chore you call upon your dual long pinkynails to do on a daily basis? I'm just curious.

That's not a very efficient scoop for a powdery substance- I can imagine quite a bit of it would get stuck under and around the edges of the nail. Did you actually see them using it in such a way?
BTW, the booger scoop thing is hilarious in a morbid sort of way :o :barf: .

I'm not a long fingernail kind of guy, I bite mine constantly but I remember my uncle having a long pinky and telling me at a young age that it was always good to have at least one long fingernail to pick up small things and do whatever odd jobs were being done.

Something else that no one has mentioned is long fingernails can mean a person is "successful" because they don’t have to do manual labor and can keep their nails long without worry of breaking them. I often see this in people who really are not successful but just want to think they are

Another option is for a weapon that never gets confiscated. Nails are surprisingly hard and can cause an attacker to think twice about what they are doing.

From what I understand it is socially acceptable for successful business people, males that is, to have mildly long well manicured nails. This is not, of course, what I am refering to. Also, not to my tastes, either.

Back in the 60's I remember the barbers at the local shop keeping their pinky nails long. They used it to 'scoop' up bundles of hair to cut them with scissors.
