Hey guys, i was thinking about making a damascus hunter knife with a feather pattern, as it seems easy enough to do with my tools.
It would be my first damascus.
I would be using 1075 with 15N20 steel.
My question is how much steel am i gonna be needing in order to create a 4-5 inch blade with hidden tang.
These are the dimensions i can get:
1075 - 6x40x250 mm (15/64" x 1.5748" x 10")
15N20 - 2x40x250 mm (1/16" x 1.5748" x 10")
Would one of each be enough?
Best way to cut them?
Oh and btw i plan to do it with hand hammer...
Feel free to give me some tips or something

I'd go one further and say just try and make some random "damascus" the first time, concentrating on getting good welds and preserving enough carbon and product to get a knife out of while doing it entirely by hand through many heats. Patterning a turd would be a worthless exercise, no?
Learn how, first, and then learn how to fancy it up.
My 2¢

Okay yea yall are def right, im doing a twist, now my only problem is how much steel to buy...

I agree with fitzo fitzo , focus on the welding. But, once you get a solid billet, then you can worry about how to manipulate it.

I'll also be an outlier and recommend either random pattern or ladder pattern if you want to try to manipulate it. One hard part with twists (IMO) is the challenge of keeping the billet centered during the forging and grinding so that the stars show up the same on both sides of the blade.

I'm with you on first Damascus being random. Focus on the welds. Chances are first one will be a flop. A lot going on for a first time. Try the feather on the tenth try.

Thanks for all the help guys but i think im gonna stick to stock removal since my forge isnt strong enough for it. Imma search for W2 steel for hamons instead...
