Hello Mr. Glesser,

Love your knives and own more than I care to admit.

Can you tell me why the Massad Ayoob model was discontinued?

This quickly became one of my favorite knives and I have heard similiar things from others who own it. It was something of a shock when I heard it was discontinued.

While attending the SHOT Show I stopped by your company's booth and asked this question, but no one I spoke with really seemed to know.

Can you shed some light on this?

Thanks for the help.

Typically a knife is discontinued due to poor sales, combined with the need to make room in production and distribution for new models.

What typically happens with custom collaborations is that they have strong sales to start (as collectors buy them), but then sales drop off steeply once the market is saturated. At this point they are discontinued and replaced with new designs. More exotic designs seem to have shorter shelf lives.

I for one would love to see the Ayoob brought back but with a G-10 handle. The design was fantastic, as might be expected from Massad but that handle was too slick for me to carry the knife more than once before putting it in my drawer where it sits to this day :(

I agree...G-10 scales...With dual stainless liners, and stretch the blade out to 4 inches.

The Ayoob design has a very unusual ergonomic feature that a lot of us would like to see in other knives. Why not a Zytel version for the masses?
Or, tinker with it a bit, and release an in-house model with the same neutral-wrist hold. (But maybe you should give Mas some royalties on this one.:))

Hi Anthony. It is as Carlos mentioned. Each year, as we add new models, old models must be disco'd. Sales numbders usually indicate which models stay.

The Ayoob is a very exotic design. I don't think that the general public is ready for it. If the demand is there, we can always bring it back, or a distributor can run an exclusive batch.

I actually never saw anything great about the Ayoob knife, it was made well typical of Spyderco but the design was flawed, It’s design made its best grip such as a pistol would be held which made the knife really usefull for maybe jabbing holes in a milk carton and that’s against everything Ayoob preaches in techniques, so never saw the design point in it so i am glad to see something replace it. Of course this was just IMO.
