Are these supposed to be worn slightly loose? In other words, do they perform better when there's a bit of wiggle room of the foot inside the boot?

Thanks!

Yes they are, yes they do. I have multiples of these, as does my fiance, and we wear them all slightly loose (to accommodate a thicker sock, when necessary).

I just received my first pair of the Arctic Sport Mid - my first proper pair of winter boots. I tried them out for the first time today while shoveling snow. I put on an REI wool liner sock and then an REI mid-weight wool hiking sock - too much... my feet were toasty but ended up sweating. I bought what I thought was a half-size larger than my regular boot size but the inside of the Mucks says full size and full size plus half. I read in other places that they feel snug when they're put on so I thought the wiggle room was evidence that I bought a size too large. Seeing how they performed today... the size will work but I need to find the sweet spot with sock choice.

Yeah, you want a little wiggle room. If they're too snug, they'll limit circulation which will actually make your feet colder. But, as you're discovering, the Muck Arctics are pretty warm boots already, so unless it's really cold, you probably don't need to double up on socks in that boot. I have the Muck "Fieldmasters" and I love them. Been using them for years, and I pretty much live in them this time of year. Good purchase.

I'm checking out their cool series already with their Xpress Cool technology. These Chore Cool Mid are comfortable up to 95 degrees.

BOGS seem to have a nice line up too, but out of everything I've ready lately comparing Mucks to BOGS... BOGS are less comfortable but with (a better) lifetime warranty.

I just got a pair of BOGS after talking with Baryonyx blades and have been wearing them a lot. They are great. Very comfortable for me. Nice and tight around the heel, with room through the toe box. For me too, the full height rubber was the deal sealer. More durable in the woods and brush where I'll be wearing them.

When I searched BF for feedback on Mucks, I saw Baryonyx's opinion on BOGS also - I hadn't heard of them until I read his post. I hadn't heard of Mucks until I watched Dave Cantenbury's video on his choice for cold-weather clothing. I was wondering if I made the right choice by buying Mucks instead of this Classic Mid and saving the difference - they both seem to offer the same performance and practically the same construction. Not having buyer's remorse, just curious if there really is an advantage of one boot over the other (Muck's Arctic Sport Mid vs. BOGS Classic Mid) - all I can see so far is thicker mid sole on the Mucks and possibly more comfortable fitting.

I know some people prefer Boggs and some prefer Mucks. But just based on the descriptions on their respective websites, I'd expect the Muck to be the warmer winter boot of the two (and folks I know who have the Arctics seem very happy with them).

The Muck Arctics offer fleece lining, 8mm neoprene and 2mm of thermal foam.

On the Boggs page it says, "Comfort rated from temperate to -40˚F or sub-zero conditions."

- 40F or sub-zero? Can't be both. I'm guessing that's a typo. Still, I'd be a little dubious about a -40F claim on that boot, if that information isn't a typo. The only insulation mentioned in the description of the Boggs boot is "7mm four way stretch Neo-Tech insulation." No mention of additional insulating foam or fleece, and slightly thinner neoprene. Then again, if their product description has typos like, "-40F or sub-zero" then maybe other pertinent info about the insulation of the boot is missing.

I think you made a fine choice if a warm winter boot was what you were looking for.

I don't doubt it nor do I question my purchase decision. The price difference between the two probably answers a lot of questions... more than likely, they're still made in the same factory and quality is on par for both. Mucks included a thumb-sized cut out of their insulation material used on the boot attached to a card describing its properties and performance. I had my Mucks on today on the way to and from the ski slopes. After my lift pass expired, we hung out watching other skiers go down the slopes - decided just to wear the thin REI wool liner this time and my feet were toasty warm without sweating in high-20s in ankle deep snow. I have a feeling I was barely scratching what these boots are capable of.

And, I think BOGS meant: "Comfort rated from temperate to -40 F" - which is what I see in descriptions of their other boots.
