I recently bought a Schrade Sp 7 at a store going out of business. Can someone tell me when these were made and the price they sold for? I paid $12.00 for it. Seem like a good deal? Also, while still clearly readable, there is a cut thru the schrade stamp on the blade. Can someone tell me the significance of this?

According to some info I got from AAPK that Dale Vincent (username orvet) put together, the SP7 was made from 1989 to 1991, with a retail price of $32.95. It's a handy, convenient knife, in my opinion, and worth the $12.00 you spent on it. I have the Craftsman version and paid around $20-25 for it when I bought it at Sears YEARS ago.

The cut through the tang stamp likely means it was rejected by quality control for some reason, and is a factory second. I don't even know if Schrade released factory seconds, or if they found their way out of the plant in lunchboxes, or some other way. I have several myself. Look it over good. From what I've seen on mine, you can usually barely see the problem, and it's generally always cosmetic.

Usually you won't find the cause of the knife being downgraded to a second.
But Schrade saw the reason.....I think. :D

Sounds like you got a good deal!

Dale,

You are absolutely correct...........it can be extremely hard to see why a knife has been dubbed a second unless you know exactly what to look for. Usually if it were bad enough that the typical person could pick it out, an employee ended up with it or it was diassembled. I have a couple seconds and I know you have one that we traded...........can you tell why that knife was dubbed a second? It doesn't make it a bad knife.....it could be just cosmetic like a slight variation in the coloring between two covers or anything as simple as that.

Some knives had an S engraved on them, some had a slash thru the model number, some were x'd out.

$12.00 for a Schrade USA, second or not is a good deal IMHO!
