Who makes the quietest dust collector?

I have two Grizzly's will post model numbers and dB numbers here later today....

Mufflers for dust collectors are easy to make and widely available to buy. Dust collection is all about having enough air movement for the equipment you are using, and generally speaking, bigger is better. It's easier to quiet down a big loud dust collector than to make an undersized dust collector move more air.

The way to make a dust collector quieter is to put it outside the room. Build a little shed just outside the shop and put it in that. Put a louver in the door or side so there will be a place for the air to go. Putting the air compressor in that shed will also quiet down a shop.

+1 Stacy. My wood shop is arranged this way with the cyclone dust collector in the shed out back, but I sure do need to move the air compressor out to the shed as well.

Here are some numbers:

Grizzly 2HP G0548Z: 109.6 dB

Grizzly 1HP G8027: 100.3 dB

Measured at the inlet. The 1HP dust collector is pretty quiet, but the 2HP unit is a freakin' howler -sounds like a jet engine.

Incidentally, here is a comparison of sound levels: https://www.chem.purdue.edu/chemsafety/Training/PPETrain/dblevels.htm The 2HP is almost at 110 dB, it works great, but is just way too loud.

I'll give the shed a try (or maybe a small concrete block building), and some mufflers too.

Anyone use one of these? http://www.grizzly.com/products/30-Gallon-Dust-Collection-2-Stage-Cyclone-Separator/W1049

Does it also quieten things down?

Thanks!

I have a Grizzly 2hp. It is extremely loud. I have both the Grizzly and my air compressor in a shed outside my shop. Not the same shed. The inside of the shed where the Grizzly is located is covered in dust. I clean it up every so often, but would not want another machine in the same shed.

I have a 1 hp & a 2 hp, both Grizzlys. The 1 hp is much quieter, but that's because it's not moving as much air. I have the 2 hp one outside under a shed roof. Both are piped outside & not using bags.

I don't hear my shop-vac when I use ear muffs. I don't hear my HF portaband when I wear them either.

Seriously, the best solution I've seen is a 3' x 3' x 3' wooden cabinet with the shop vac inside and the cyclone outside the cabinet. Most of the motor sound is muffled this way.
