Folks, I'm seriously considering a career change and have applied for a train services job (conductor) here in the Phoenix area. I was wondering if there were any Union Pacific engineers or conductors that hung out here that could fill me in on the requirements?

My son is a UP conductor out of Nor Cal. Send me a private post and I'll get you in touch with him.

From what he has told me, it's a crazy job that pays well. And you can't have a screw up without UP.

My bro-in-law went from school teacher to Trainman about 8 years ago. Great pay and benne's but like any Co. with lots of "hands' ,you get some real story material. He is an Engr. now , a relatively quick rise I gather due to lots of "Oldheads" retiring.

Dantzk8...wow 20yrs with the French R.R. and a knife nut also. I bet you have some stories!

Narco99,

I've been lucky during those 20 years, no derailment, no accident, somes technical breakdowns of course but nothing serious. It's a solo job, that's what i appreciate; cold blood, resourcefulness is needed but don't worry, you will learn that quickly. I wish you the best.
