Heys guys, I was wondering if any of you guys had one of the Rambo replica knives, and if you have anything good or bad to say about them. I have wanted one of these ever since I started collecting knives. I may pick up a job this summer (im 15 so thats great), and may have a chance at getting one. However I wanted to ask you guys if they were worth it. I do know they are novelty knives. I would be fairly hesitant to buy one full price, because they probably have a cheaper steel, but can they hold an edge ok? If any of you guys have one, i'd love to hear about it and what you think about it.
Thanks!

I don't own any of the replicas. Instead I made my own replica of the knife/machete from the fourth movie. It's only mild steel, but given that John Rambo was a soldier rather than a blacksmith, the likelihood of him being able to forge a proper knife behind enemy lines, with limited resources, was quite slim, so it probably would've been the same.

I prefer one of the Ontario Government issue knives used by the military instead of a novelty knife. A few examples would be the Ontario 6141 MK 3 Navy Knife and the Ontario 6504 OKC3S Marine Bayonet.

They (repos) aren't great knives. But they aren't terrible knives either. I have often wanted one of the Rambo blades just for the heck of it. If you like them, go for it and have fun, but I would spend my money elsewhere.

I was more interested 20 years ago and before you were born. :D

If you want a certain knife for your collection, get one. Everybody here has bought knives because they are cool looking.

That said, in addition to the many of the "replicas" being low quality, most are not licensed, and, hence, theft.

Just a suggestion - some of the makers of these "Rambo" knives are less than ethical or very poor business men. Read this thread and then search the GBU Forum using the search function for "Gudowski", for many more threads on the topic.

Proceed with caution and know which product you are buying before you do so.

Best of luck. :)

I have a Buckmaster 184 and while it doesn't see much use, it does make me smile.

I believe the Buck model was the best one back in the day if I remember correctly.Buckmaster survival knife?

The Buckmasters are extremely cool, but just a tad bit out of my price range. Are there similar but less expensive versions. I know a quality hollow-handled knife wont exactly be cheap.

I also have a Buckmaster 184 that my dad gave me back in the 80's. He had bought a black one and a silver one. He let choose which one and I choose black. He passed away about 4 years ago and I found the silver one in the back of his gun safe. Now I have both and would not take anything for them because of the connection to him. His looks new, but mine got used quite a bit when I was young.

As it's been said take a look at Ontario or KA-BAR and see what they have to offer .but if your dead set on a ramdo knife . take a look at the boker Rambo 2 Sylvester Stallone signature edition

I've never seen the Boker rambo knife that would be pretty cool. If you want a tough hollow handle that doesn't look like the traditional rambo knives the Boker Apparo is very tough and well made and not terribly expensive.

Its the one on the far right and I've beat on it pretty hard and its a good knife.

The actual knife was a custom by Gil Hibben. In the movie, Rambo was an accomplished blacksmith- he also was not behind enemy lines when making the knife.

I do not think they are worth it. Large fixed blade knives are very practical, but you'd need to spend very good money for a good quality Rambo replica.

The official movie reproductions are made by United Cutlery, and I'm my opinion nothing from that brand is a good tool. They are cheap decorative items shaped like knives. They are OK if you're a Rambo fan and want display pieces.

For the price of the licensed reproductions (around $100 or so) you can get much better knives from good companies. Is the hollow handle a must for you? Because if it isn't and you just want a large, tough, outdoors knife you should look at Beckers. The BK-9 costs about the same as one of UC's Rambo knives, but it's made in the USA by Ka-Bar out of very good steel (for its intended purpose) and the pouch on the sheath will hold more stuff than a hollow handle (and you get a knife with a proper full tang).
