Man, I have a heavy heart and this knot in my stomach. UGH! About 4 or 5 hours earlier on, 2 trucks from the local fire department (paramedics and fire engine, pretty customary) and two sheriff SUVs pulled up in my cut-de-sac and right in front of the house curbside. They went to the neighbor's next door and something just wrenched my guts as I was witnessing the events transpiring right before my eyes.

The ol' boy next door was no spring chicken but an erudite and educated guy, a Vietnam veteran and always a pleasure to speak with. My guts tell me that I will not see him anymore walking his dogs, having our conversations when putting out our trash and/or picking up the trash bins on Thursdays. I am not 100% certain yet but by the flow of some cars which I assumed to be friends and relatives, the female deputies sticking by his door for quite a while, I am feeling like shit because I think that this neighborhood lost a very decent human being today :(

Sorry to hear that...best wishes sent!

Thanks man, obviously not a relative just neighbors for 7-8 years. Every 4th of July, Veterans Day, Memorial and all that had the flags out, served his country, memorialized his fallen brethren and even went to the Wall in DC a few times in his life to commemorate those fallen from his platoon. Plus was the nicest neighbor to me, never any PITA. Sorry for the downer and all but I'm in denial and shock. Guy like that deserves sharing fond memories of. Thank you John.

Sounds like a great guy Mat, and the type of neighbor everyone hopes for. We've been lucky here so far, but friends of ours moved because their neighbor was so bad (and our friends were there first).

Casinostocks Casinostocks ,

Assuming he passed, I am sorry for your loss. It is never easy to see the good ones go. I lost my dad many years ago to a heart attack; he seemed fine the day before (on Father's Day), and was gone the next day. I found comfort in the fact that he went quickly and did not linger and suffer. Take good care of yourself, and remember the good times you had with him.

Thanks again y'all. I apologize for ruining everyone else's Saturday and weekend with my downer story.

Earlier on I was just sitting in the front room with a view to the street on this warm-hot Saturday PM of August 1st, chin-wagging with Marc via PM telling him that he was d*ck and he was telling me that was a d*ck going back and forth while this stuff was happening. Now as a backdrop, we do have a few older folks on this cut-de-sac for whom I've seen the parameds called out quite a few times. Heck my own mother had a slip and fall last year and the paramedics were here within a short few minutes (thanks to tax $ greatly at work!) so although a bit concerned my mind had defaulted back to slip and fall so I carried on with calling Marc as d*ck but when I saw the cavalry and then sticking around, my heart sank. The signs became ominous.

Thank you all again. You are all great guys and CPK attracts the best of 'em around here :)

Another fabulous weekend in Miami!

Anyone have thoughts on (linen) micarta vs G10?

G10 isnt the greatest of grips but also, it is impermeable. How does micarta stack up in terms of stability? Will it soak liquids and expand/shrink?

I prefer micarta over G10 generally. It’s a little lighter, and I prefer the feel. It doesn’t expand and contract like natural wood. Some of the exposed surface fibers will soak up some fluid, hence it darkens when you put mineral oil on it, but it can easily be washed off with soap and water. I think Nathan said he would recommend micarta for skinning and game prep, but not Tero Tuf because the bacteria might go deeper into the Tero Tuf and it would be hard to sanitize. I think buffed linen would soak up less than unbuffed canvas micarta. That’s my two cents, about what it’s worth.

Speaking of that, a long while back someone was planning to test some Tero scales during hunting season. I never saw a report...was that you by chance @Hard Knocks ?

Not all micarta is created equally. Ironically, Norplex, the company that bought the trademark from Westinghouse is not necessarily the best manufacturer of micarta. Most of our micarta is Accurate acculam and is more dense than much of the material available today. In my opinion it is a sanitary material, it does not absorb much of anything.
