Here’s a bracelet that I made a while ago and have been wearing.

This is nothing too new, just perhaps a simpler and easier version to make.

I hope some of you will give it a go. It took me only 5 minutes to make one so it's really easy and a really cool bracelet. And it doesn't cost much at all.

First, I’d like to say thanks to Mercop, I got this idea not only from Ranger/pacer beads that I already knew about and been using for many years but also from something that Mercop makes called the Worry Leash that he is kind enough to make for people who need it, like friends and Vets at the VA hospital's PTSD ward.

The reason I’m posting here is because it’s easy to make one yourself and I thought some of you might like one.

It serves as a worry bead bracelet (known by the Greeks as Komboloi) and Ranger beads/pacer beads, all in one. Atleast that's how I use mine. It’s basicly just a Ranger/pacer beads looped together to form a bracelet, but it’s also a good worry beads bracelet too for those times when I am stressed.

For me I like the fact it’s not just a worry beads. It’s also something very practical and useful beyond just the psychological help it can provide. It’s a perfectly good Ranger bead so you can use it while hiking.

Anyway, here is some basic info on Komboloi or worry beads:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worry_beads

The idea behind the Komboloi or any worry beads is that when you feel especially anxious or stressed or even depressed you slide a bead up or down and it releaves stress or passes time. Sometimes just giving your fingers something like this to do just releases just enough stress so you can go on a bit longer.
I know many of us have experienced difficult times and I’m no different.

Something like this can often be enough to "reset the fuse box", as Mercop says.

And here’s some very basic info about Ranger beads, ofcourse they’re used for keeping track of how much you have walked/hiked. FWIW, I use the metric system ONLY.

If you prefer miles, see this video:

I’m sure you all know how to use Ranger beads so I won’t keep going on about this. If someone is unclear about it, please ask. They’re a pretty useful thing to keep track of your distance.

And finally, here is my worry beads/ranger beads bracelet.

I use steel nuts instead of beads, M6 size, and a length of olive drab military 550 paracord. But you can use nice beads, and another type cord.

Start off by doubling the cord over itself, as in the photo , and sliding down all 13 of the beads. Then make a simple knot at the top making a small loop. You have to make the loop just the right size because later on you’ll finish the bracelet by making a small knot that will go into this loop so you can close the bracelet. Too small of a loop and you can’t close the bracelet. Too big and your bracelet will come off at the wrong time.

You’ll have to figure out the right size of the loop on your own.

Now, from the loop count 4 beads and make a knot, to separate the kilometer (or half mile) beads from the 9 100 meter beads (1/16th mile) just as you would with any Ranger beads. So you should have 4 beads separated from the other 9 beads by knots.

To finish the bracelet make another knot at the end, which will go into the loop you made at the other end. This knot will go into the loop and keep the bracelet closed.
Make sure you make the knot at the right distance, depending on how big you wrist is.

Oh, and remember to burn the ends of the cord so it doesn’t fray.

Hard to explain but I think it’s pretty clear from the two photos.

Any questions, please ask.

You can make yours a lot prettier than I made mine, you can use actual beads, or skulls, or whatever.

Personally I like metal nuts because they don’t break, even if I take the bracelet off and use it to clobber someone with it. Another reason why I like the heft and strength of metal nuts.:)

How well do the nuts stay in place when you use them as pace counters? Really like the idea of a bracelet, but seems like steel nuts on the paracord might move around a bit?

As with any beads you need to match up the hole size with the thickness of the double paracord to get a tight fit that will stay in place tight but not too tight.

the nuts stay really really well. Infact, this is another reason I use nuts instead of beads. The inside thread of the nuts seems to keep it in place better.

Best is to experiment yourself and see what works best for you.

Best of luck.

Thats a real nice idea bro, I am gonna make one of those...... I used to use ranger beads alot, and lost the ones I carried in the cav.

Hey j williams, I think all us old cav scouts got real familiar with ranger beads. Course, I was in before GPS....

We had GPS, but it was brand new, and the size of a brick. Same weight too!! I had the same set forever, and lost em in the woods, I wish I still had em, they had alot of miles on them and were in some very interesting places!! SCOUTS OUT BRO! Cavalry leads the way!

Very cool. I doubt I would be diligent enough to count every step I take when I'm out, but maybe they will help me quit biting my nails.

Stingray, you will get a feel for your pace after using them for a while, and will not need to count steps anyme. They will just keep track of your distance once you figure out your pace time. Give em a shot dude, they are pretty neat....
