RATMANDU or RODENT 5

Hey guys, I have SYKCO 511 which can hold an edge very well, the handle is a bit skinny. So I'm thinking about ordering either a RATMANDU or a RODENT 5. RODENT 5 seems less popular between the 2, it's 10 bucks cheaper, slightly longer and 1 once heavier than RMD. I do not have any chance to hold them before buy one as I'm in New Zealand with very limited access to BUSSE kin. So, which one do you think is better for hunting + camping. Thanks a lot

Though one can choke up on the blade of a knife, Id choose neither for skinning (hunting).

Both will do as a utility camp knife (camping knife).

The Rodent Solution wouldnt be too shabby for skinning whitetails.

agree, 5+ inch knife isnt as good as a 3.5 inch blade for skinning. Im considering RMD or RODENT 5 cause Im seeking a "one knife" solution--invest in a "do it all" knife.

Wish I could help ya, but I've only handled a Rodent 5 for about 5 seconds at the BLADE Show once. I do love the Ratmandu though, own more than I should, haha. One of my favorites in that size range. Got a medium size hand with fingers on the long side of average to the palm size and the RMD fits it well. Surely some others who do have both or experience with both will be along shortly. :)

ETA: Forgot to mention... I was the one who suggested having your thread moved to the Swamp Rat forum. I hope that you don't object. I figured that you might get more helpful replies here...hopefully more helpful than mine! :D

Ratmandu!!! A Rodent 3 for a short blade, a three finger out of the way until you need it tool. A short blade with a longer handle? The Rodent Solution.

I'd say it will depend on how big your hands are.
RMD has smaller handle, and I'd say is really comfy for folks with small and medium hands.
R5 has more substantial handle, so if you have bigger hands that might be a better option for you.

I know of a place or two in Sydney where you could get to compare the two... ;)

I have used my RMD for everything from prying up paver stones to skinning a wild Texas pig (you will not find a more difficult animal to clean) and it has excelled at everything I have put it through. I will say though I would have rather had a Rodent Solution to clean that pig as that knife is darn near a perfect hunting knife and would be perfect if they would make it in 1/8th inch stock, but the RMD is the best all around knife on the market from any company imo.

BTW the Rats down under are some of the finest people on earth and I am sure they wouldn't mind let you play with a couple of knives if you made your way to the Sydney area.

1/8" stock Solution? I smell Elmax! Wouldn't that be sweet. :)

Steelcraft, if you want want the knife, whichever one you choose, a bit more skinning friendly you can ask Custom Shop to make it a drop point.
I have on good authority that a few drop point RMDs were made... ;)
And an odd R6 or two...

Hey elof_alv mate, nice pics, you make me want them both:D love the drop point RMD, will custom shop charge more for modification? Thanks mate

Totally agree, Rodent Solution will be the next on my shopping list ;) hope the 1/8" model will be out for order soon?

Thanks everyone for your input, I will order a RMD (or maybe 2, 1 normal 1 drop point) soon. Hope can get them after new year? Cheers

Steelcraft,
Yes, drop point costs a little bit extra.

I also have a hollow ground RS, it's a wicked slicer and has the same spine thickness as regular RS but is slightly lighter. And there were a few RSs ordered through custom shop that were flat ground as well.

Custom shop orders usually take a few weeks longer than regular website offerings, and I guess you would be looking at after Christmas/New Year delivery if you ordered now. And the good thing is that you don't have to pay until your knife is ready to ship.

Chiz mate, how many RMD you have in total? I'm about placing my order today. will probably get a normal RMD first, as you said the customized one will take a bit longer. Im aware they will only charge my credit card when ready to ship -- I ordered 2 scrapyard 511 months back. The international shipping they charged was a bit expensive $55 :(
