Here's the deal. I know I'm getting a RAT-7 D2 with the combo edge for Xmas. I also REALLY like the Ranger Ready Detachment knives. I'm right on the edge of getting myself one of the Rangers for Xmas to go along with my new RAT. Wanted to know which one you guys like more, which size Ranger you prefer and experience with their knives. No other suggestions please.

Ranger. Hands down.

If it were me, I would look into getting an Afghan from Ranger. It's similar in size to the Rat7, but a much nicer profile IMO.

I know some guys here have Afghans. Maybe someone will post one.

I do not own a Ranger knife so I will not say anything negative but I do own alot of RAT knives.I own a RAT 3 D2 & 1095, TAK1 D2 & 1095 ,RAT 7 1095 AND RTAKII all have plain edge blades ,no need for the combo setup

Don't know about the Ranger. But try to get the RAT-7 in 1095; D2 sucks.

That sounds like Cliff Stamp.

Does it suck because you can't sharpen it properly. or because of it's supposed fragility.

I'd like a more detailed opinion on this. Unless your just trolling.

I prefer 1095 , it is so much easy to re-sharpen and is just a great base blade for ages, it will rust if not taken care of but a little maintaince,light/thin coat of oil and good to go. D2 is so tough to re-sharpen, holds a edge longer than 1095 but just harder to re-sharpen. I own both D2 & 1095 both RAT knives and I like them both , every blade has pro's & con's ,Just buy you one of each RAT 7 in D2 & 1095 and test'em out see which blade you prefer for your application.

I know I like the D2 more. I was just curious what and why of other people. I have several knives in 1095 and I like them a lot and they are easier to sharpen, but for some of my beat-to-deaths I like the D2 and harder steels that have a little better edge retention. Harder to sharpen usually goes along with harder to dull.

Thats what I did and any true knife nut would do the same.:D

For most knives I like 1095, but D2 has it's place.

:thumbup:Thanks , if you do a search on RAT knives compared to... or 1095 vs. D2 this topic gets repeated every few months which is no big deal to me ,new members like to know these things and a refresher course is always welcome ; back when I first joined the BF i read everything I could on the RAT 3 and trying to decide which to buy 1095 or D2 and in every aspect there were pro's & cons so I just bought one of each and settled the debate for myself...and the winner is ....1095 everyday usage...D2 around lakes and ponds or river riding & everyday use (LOL)...but I just like both ,the blades both cut,one last longer cutting wise than the other, so I bought a pair of RAT 3 D2 & 1095 AND TAK-1 in D2 & 1095 ,now I am rambling ...buy one of each moral of the story.

I decided to go ahead and snatch up A Ranger RD7. I figured it couldn't hurt. The only thing I could have done without, I was clicking the "finish" button and reading my reciept and just happened to look at the address of the store I ordered it from. Turns out that store is about 20-30 minutes away from my house. I called and asked if they had a storefront (since a lot of online stores don't these days) and they said "yes sir." Luckily I had a code to get free shipping, otherwise I would have been slightly tiffed at myself.

My vote goes to the Ranger. Justin is the one of the friendliest vendors you'll ever deal with, the knives are built like tanks, and they also have a warranty that covers ANY unintentional damage other than rust for life.

I'll take the Ranger. Just in is great to do business with, his knives do everything well. The RATs are just more corporate america crap, get a Ranger or ask someone who has one to lend it to you, the quality is there.

As to D2 vs. 1095 who cares they both take a helluva edge. Metal is metal once you get over 420 and 440a.

I'm having a fun day. Ordered me a ranger and a new strop. I think I'll walk the hell away from my computer now. lol

Rangers are hard to beat in many aspects. I love mine due to the great price to performance ratio. The best there is!

I think if you are looking for a knife to do mainly chopping, I'd go for the Ranger but if you are looking for say a camp type blade that will be used for carving and slicing then I'd go for the RAT due to their thinner stock !!!
