Does anyone know the make of backpack Ray Mears uses. I've been watching his shows for a while (since he first started appearing on Tracks, if anyone in the UK can remember that...), and no matter what type of terrain he's in, he's always got the same backpack. I think that it's water proof as well, from what I've seen.

Thanks.

Orm.

Hi Orm,
have you not got Rays Bushcraft book yet? There are three packs he uses. The one you see on TV most is made by Scottish Mountain Gear, though I have never heard of the company, perhaps they are under a different name now? He also uses a berghaus munro 35l and a 100l external framed pack from Norrona of Norway. All three are in the book.

Hope that helps

Will

Thanks for that Will.

I haven't got any of Ray's books yet, but planning to buy them in the future. Now I've just got to find a place to get the pack :)

Thanks again,

Orm

I e-mailed Woodlore and asked them where you can get the Scottish mountain gear pack, they simply replied "its not available". I can't find out anything about it or the company. It looks quite old though so maybe Ray had it custom made?

Hi Willadams,

Don't expect an real answer back from Ray Mears site, they have been telling for months that their KIT section would be up and running the end of March then April then May and nothing really happens.
It's a pitty, that they don't really follow up on it.

I know what you mean, it still says on their news page the kit page will be ready by the end of March:eek:

I do know however that they just have one girl (Rachel) answering phones, replying to e'mails, managing web site, taking bookings, plus all the other regular admin jobs. I think she gets a bit snowed under.

Perhaps with all that extra money from overpriced kit they could hire someone else to help out;)

Hi Willadams,

I (we) would be happy to start sending around Large Military firesteels for the 10 pounds excluding postage that they are asking our Scouting group would just love to do that and even pay a small fee to RM ;).
When we do a fundraiser we normally get $10/$11 a Firesteel and that's a lot less then 10 BP.

Did you ever get one of the Bison Bushcraft knives? If so I would like to hear your opinions on it. I posted a thread asking about them when I first joined BF but nobody seemed to know anything.

I plan on making my own knife of similar designs to woodlore/bison bushcraft, so would appreciate any input. I have ordered a Helle Eggen to see how the scandanavian bevels hold up.

I don't know of anyone who owns a woodlore or bison knife even on BF:eek:

Hi Willadams,

I've a good friend who will try making the "Ray Mears" design knife from 1/8" O1 stock and we've been emailing discussing the Skandinavian bevel etc.

I have a Helle Eggen knife, and I have it scarry sharp and it holds it's edge reasonably well.
What I don't like is the flimsy soft leather sheath they include, and I'm already making an new thicker tan saddleleather sheath.

Sharpening, is so simple just "press" the bevel to the stone and make a stroke.

What you'll notice for sure is that the sides of the blade consisting of some low grade stainless steel are super soft, just by cutting some branches that had some dust on them I scratched up the sides extremely deep. No problem as it's going to be a "beater knife".

I find the grip extremely comfortable providing a safe grip no gliding onto the scarry edge here but minehad an opening between the blade/tang and the grip, water, blood etc. can easilly find their way into the grip and start living their own lives, possibly contaminating food that you cut later on.

I will look into injecting some 2 component glue that I heated to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit to get it into a watery fluant state (for a very short time) and inject it with a tiny syringe/needle in the openings and try to close the gap between grip and blade/tang.

I'll also try drilling an lanyard hole through the end of the grip and it will need to be off center at the upper part of the heel.

Thanks for that, let me know how your "Ray Mears" knife turns out.

I was planning on drilling a lanyard hole in the Eggen too, as I like to carry a chain linked length of para cord that unravels long enough to use in a fire bow.

:)
