Hey Guys, I polished up the Infidu and broke out the microscope again. Check this out. :D

You gotta love Infidus

I approve of this . . . Well done sir . . Well done

Thanks Rob. You finally made me break down and order a wicked edge. I did one one practice kitchen knife and this knife # 2. I actually did not mean to do this much of a reprofile, so I clearly have some fine tuning to do, but it came out nice and sharp.

what did you sharpen with?

BTW superb job indeed

Wicked Edge
ran through all the diamond stones, then glass platens with the lapping film down to .5 micron

I find it interesting how the knife is mirror polished to the naked eye, but still has edge defects and scratches under the microscope. I guess you could take it even finer.

I will also say that I still prefer a convex edge with a belt sander for heavy use knives, but I can't get them quite this sharp freehand with the sander (sander will get to a smooth shave no problem though)

The belt sander will just take off more steel in the long run.

I have the WE as well but after the diamond I have the 1200-1600 and 1.4-0.6 micron ceramics followed by the 5-3.5 micron strop. Gets it pretty good. Have the glass platens too but haven't touched them plan on selling them.

If you do sell them how much?

That polished edge looks great, I also have the WE and love how great of a job it does. The reflection of his hair is amazing.

Great stuff... Looks like something rob would do :). I'm just Happy if my knives can chop wood  I have a few that are hair popping sharp and they scare me .

Thanks for sharing!

After some research, it seems to me that most people now go with the new 1500 grit diamond stone and skip the ceramics. I went with the platens since I have traditionally reprofiled to a convex edge and I wanted to try the full flat edge for something different. If you are really being particular the platen should maintain the "V"-ness and last degree of sharpness just a bit better (not always a good thing).

Yes Rob is the original Wicked Edge mirror polish guru, I am merely a student :)

That is awesome, what brand microscope do you have?

The microscope brand is Accu-Scope; it is a scientific binocular microscope. The camera is a Celestron eyepiece digital imager. The microscope is great but really meant for slides and things. It is very cumbersome for knives, has a very shallow depth of focus, and I bet there are better, cheaper options if you just want it for knives. The Celestron camera leaves much to be desired and I am thinking of upgrading it, but it does well for fun videos like this.

Nice job, and thanks for sharing! I agree it is interesting to view something like a knife edge under a microscope. I think what appears to be the smoothest edge possible will still look still look somewhat rough under enough magnification. At some point the difference in practical sharpness will be unnoticeable.

The micro-serrations on a rougher edge can sometimes be helpful depending on the type of material being cut.

I have had similar feelings :) - I also have a few really sharp knives, and I am extra careful with them.

Wow !! Great job there mach5 looks awesome !

Awesome edge, mate.

I really wonder if I should pick up the Wicked Edge Gen III as well or just get the blade grinder attachment for my Worksharp (pro: convex ege / con: electricity needed).
I can get my knives arm hair shaving sharp freehand with strops and compound but not hair splitting sharp.

Wish I had a cam here. Sold my RMD but the new owner was not so happy with the choil so he sold it back to me.
He put a convex edge on it, free hand with stones and strops. That edge is so shiny!

thanks for sharing, goes well with my last post about laser sharp. Thats crazy dude. You could surgery with that lol. Nice job. I wish I had half those skills. I got to get me a wicked sharp. Once I get all the OP2W paid off I think that's on my list next. I like sharp. Cool. Thank you. Hey just noticed this will be my 1000th post too. Whoo Hoo. no better place to put it by the way. Loved the video. It is amazing that is a hair. Looks like a copper wire or something. Fitting music too by the way.
