hey all;

i'm in the market for a good set of boots to go hunting in.

please bear in mind: i live in outback Australia where the temperature rarely drops below 30C during the day, so super-duper insulated, trekking in the Arctic Circle boots aren't needed.

what is needed is ~8-10" high, good soles and tough enough that a snake might have trouble tagging me through it. mostly it'll be used trudging across plains and through river channels.

something MilSpec is what i'm thinking, but i'm open to suggestions.

any ideas guys?

thanx in advance.

I have two pairs of Red Wings that I love. One pair is going on 2 years old and the other is going on 3 years old. I did have to get new eyelets put in the older pair because they were chewing up laces, but other than that they are going strong. I wear them for everything from work to hunting and doing yard work. Heck, I don't even own a pair of shoes anymore. If you consider Red Wings, just make sure you get the US made ones and not China ones, I've heard the China ones aren't all that great. Before I found them I tried three pairs of Wolverines and None of them lasted more than a year. One pair only lasted a few months before they were junk. You might want to check out Danner too, they are supposed to make some really good boots.

Lowa Upland Hunters or Desert Boots. Fantastic support, durable, and should be easy to get as they are from Europe. They have a cordura upper, which may offer some snake protection.

Word of warning. Those Bates were part of a recall because the boots were falling apart both with the gluing and stiching, on our soldiers in the stan.

If an all leather upper is okay check out the Black Bear 803 10" or Elk Tracker 881 12" boots from Irish Setter. Just make sure to keep them well oiled with a mink oil or bees wax based leather care product and they will provide years of service. Montana Pitch Blend Leather dressing is my favorite.

My current Hiking/backpacking/hunting boots is a pair of Elk Tracker 882's with 600g insulation. They worked well this last winter when I was snow mobiling in -5f to +5f degree weather. But are a little warm for summer use so I'm planning to get a pair of 881's or 803's in the next few months for summer use.

By the way, Irish Setter Hunting boots are made by Red Wing Shoes. I'm also looking at the Red Wing 620 9" loggers or the 1202 work boots.

Greetings from Africa ....... Outback is on my bucket list :D but boots I have used in the Kalahari and found good .....

1 - Magnum Desert Response boots. Were cheap and lasted very well. Padding inside did wear through after 16 mths of heavy use but boot & sole was solid thoughout. Breathes OK
2 - Danner USMC Desert boot. Expensive but of all my american sourced boots, still my favourite. Well made, comfortable, breathed better than my Magnums, thread worked very well in sand. Would not feel short changed if I had to stay with them.

My current ones and all time favourite is the Meindl Desert Fox boots. German made so expensive compared to US boots but the boots are a work of art. Got them and felt worn in from the first minute. Breathes well, traction is great, comfortable, best ankle support of the three and after 12 mths I can see little to no wear on the sole. I highly recommend them in a dry hot environment.

I am not saying these are the best but based on my personal experience ........ I would not hesitate to reccomend any of the 3 above. All three cleans up reasonably well ...I use a mild soapy water solution and stiff bristle brush ..... works fine to get rid of the blood from the hunts. I hunt, walk and stalk so average mileage in the desert on a good day is around 20 mile mark with a 18lbs pack and a rifle. I am 5'10" at 210 lbs and I am hard on shoes.

BTW, I normally buy on eBay.

Cheers

Aubrey

I like the Bates R.A.T. boots also ; they are a bit heavy but not as heavy as the Danner desert arcadia ,I have both and I don`t wear the Danners they are too heavy and they feel unstable to me ,I know they are a popular boot and many love them but for the price buy two pairs of the R.A.T.s . I also heard of the recall on the R.A.T. boots but mine are holding up just fine after 5 months and they still look new and I weigh 300lbs and work 40+ hours a week often in wet and muddy conditions and on roofs ect. and have had no problems. I also have the Oakley tactical boots they are super comfortable but I found them to be crazy slippery on wet sufaces like ladder rungs and roofs anything wet is a real problem with them so they are my around the house boots as long as it isn`t raining:( .

You may chuckle at this suggestion but I just got some Sebago Beacon Docksides and I reckon they would be perfect. They are a moccasin style ankle boot with a rubber sole. Extremely well made. The native americans knew how to make shoes for travelling long distances in hot weather and these things will be silent as the grave due to the rubber sole. Perfect for hunting in a dry hot climate. They also make a higher boot if snakes are an issue.

For a light weight and breathable boot with good tread, check out Palladium Boots.

I wear some leather ones daily and love them. I go to work in them, and then I go trail running in them before going home. Rinse and repeat. I like 'em better than my $350 Asolo Hiking boots, better than my $300 Redwing steel toes, and better than my Merrell trail runners that I got on sale. The Palladiums can be had for under 100 bucks. They're awesome. I wear them every chance I get.

They come in light weight canvas, regular weight canvas, leather, and a waterproof leather version. There's also a longer version of the boot with all the same options I just listed. Just google them!

woohoo!

thanks guys!

looks like i have a lot of research to do. cheers for the pointers!

I would second Red Wing boots, the ones I have are a bit too heavy for warm weather but they're quality is top notch.
Another suggestion would be ASolo boots, real comfortable and good looking.
Running the risk of ridicule, I would also suggest the blackhawk!!!!! light assault boots, just dont tell anyone

I wear a pare of USMC hot weather combat boots with some Bates inserts and LOVE them. I wear these boots as much as I wear regular shoes and they are about 5 years old in this pic. I bought these on a Marine base and the tag has long since worn away so no manufacture.

Red Wings all the way for me. I wear the slip-on wellington-style Pecos but my pops has worn their plain 6-inch lace-ups for years. Great boots, but opt for the soft toes, as the steel toe are heavy and unnecessary for most applications.

Karrimor Outbacks, not as high as 8" but have been using them as warm weather hiking boots for years. Guys I know have done deployments to Iraq and / or A'stan with them with satisfactory results.
