I'll be moving to the North LA area (North Hills/Northridge area to be exact) and was wondering if there were any FMA schools in the area that you would recommend.

How far are you willing to drive? There are SO MANY schools/instructors in Southern California (unfortunately, not enough Sayoc guys)...

I've never had the opportunity to train with him, but I've heard some pretty good things about Cass Magda (student of Dan Inosanto).

Reseda is one city south of Northridge...

Great, I think I know where that is. I'm Filipino and wanted to learn more about this part of my culture. So, I'm willing to travel 25 miles to a good school. I would really like to learn Sayoc style, so any certified school within that radius is game for me.

On a side note, can you recommend a MMA/BJJ/Kickboxing school in my area? I'd like to compliment my FMA training with some sorta unarmed training.

I believe you can do all of those things at the Innosanto academy. Also consider a dog brother school.

Haha, you opened up a can of worms on this one...

Southern California probably harbors the absolute best martial arts instructors in the world. Seriously. The Machados have a studio just down the street from the Dog Brothers studio, which is close to the Inosanto studio. Also, we have the premier Gracie academies, including the original Gracie Academy in Torrance. Lots of MMA studios in Southern California too.

You should definitely think about checking the Lakewood Sayoc Kali training group out. Why? Because they kick ass! =) As Samuel said, you should get in touch with Joey Pena (dagajoe@aol.com) or Travis Downing(travdowning@msn.com).

Samuel, do you train with the Lakewood group? I'm Danny, the new guy. I'm really sorry, but I'm really really bad with names. Were you at the intensive or the seminar? Drop me a line at djo@ucsd.edu

dsmxi you are so right. So many good instructors so littel time. Where is the Lakewood Sayoc Kali group at? Do they have a website, I couldn't find anything at the Sayoc website. Does this group do any sparring? Thanks for all the info. I also have some more questions for you. Thanks once again.

I checked out some of the schools mentioned. Unfortunately, most of them (Inosanto's, Sayoc, and Dog Bros) are very far from where I'm staying. I can't afford to drive an hour everyday. I did manage to check out Kru Rex's school (about 10mins away from my house) and plan on visiting Cass Magda's school tomorrow. Any info on Kru Rex?

Samuel,

Are you going to try and make it to one of these seminars? I'm going to be there all this weekend and it would be great to finally meet you. :D

I have trained with Guru Cass many times and he is definitely worth the visit and experience. He is VERY good and an excellent teacher. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Guro Steve,

Thanks for the heads up.

J,

I am planning on going Sunday (hoping my cold goes away by then). Hope to see you and the Lakewood guys there.

You'll see a lot of the Lakewood boys on Saturday, and hopefully ALL of us on Sunday.

D,

Cool! Looking forward to it. I met Jamie (sp?) at Ed Parkers last weekend and he told me about all the great training you guys are getting!

Does anyone have any experience with House of Champions' escrima classes? They are located in Van Nuys and are offering two weeks free training. I was thinking of checkin it out and trying their escrima and BJJ classes. I believe they use the Doce Pares system.

Welcome to the neighborhood!!!!

I would highly recommend Cass Magda's School in Reseda. It opened up in the late 80's so it's been around for a while and is not going to close up shop anytime soon. Although, we train in JKD, Western Boxing, Wing Chun, and Muy Thai, it is obvious that Kali and Silat are favored arts here. Single stick, double stick, knife, and disarms are all part of the standard ciriculum.

And when (not if :D ) you speak to a Sifu, tell them that Gene in the phase 2-2 class, sent you. Good luck!
