Recon 1 knife in Australia

I’m thinking of buying a recon 1 as my first knife and I was wondering whether it was legal to own in Australia as I have seen people in reviews on YouTube flicking the blade out. After reading the ABF importation laws on knives, I found that flick knives are illegal so I was wondering whether or not the recon 1 is a flick knife given that people are able to deploy it by a mere wrist flick. Sorry if I sound uneducated too, I’m kinda new to knives as well as the forum as this is my first day.
If anyone is in Australia and owns a Recon 1 it would also be helpful if you commented
Thanks for the help guys and gals.

Well, first off welcome to BladeForums.

Secondly, the Recon 1 is an excellent all around EDC, that despite being quite robust also cuts well. It’s a great choice.

In regards to “flicking”, it can be quickly opened using the thumb stud if the user knows the technique. With effort, it can also be deployed by wrist action as well.

To mitigate this, you could tighten the pivot which would eliminate the ability to deploy the blade quickly.

Ok nice, would you say that the recon 1 deployment method would be described as this:
A blade which opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by any pressure applied to a button, spring or device in or attached to the handle of the knife.

For what it's worth, I just did a Google search and found 3 online Australian knife vendors that sell the Cold Steel Recon folder.

I'm not sure how things work in Australia but that would lead me to believe that particular knife is legal in your country.

There might be more vendors that sell them, but I stopped looking after finding three.

Ok thanks, Australian weapon laws are tricky and some what precise to my knowledge and given this is my first knife I’m purchasing, I’d rather make absolutely certain that I don’t screw up and end up with a massive fine.

You're welcome. And welcome to Bladeforums. :)

And you're right. It's always a good idea to check the law .

Im not a lawyer, but Im pretty sure its legal, even in nanny state Victoria to import one hand openers like thumbstuds and flippers. The only restriction are on assisted openers, auto's and balisongs.
They are certainly legal to sell , posses and even carry with a legitimate purpose.
You can google the prohibited weapons list for your state and get the exact wording of the laws.
Importing can be tricky though, because customs is largely staffed by incompetant muppets, I once had a Queen slipjoint seized!, they gave it back when I explained it did not lock, and required two hands to open and that my state had no restrictions ever on simple pocket knives.
Still a pain in the butt, there's plenty of good dealers here though, I buy all my flippers and one handers here so I dont have to deal with the dingbats at customs.

Hi, I don’t have a recon 1 but I do have a Cold Steel code 4 bought over the counter (I’m in Qld).
I think the law is different state to state and what you can carry might be different. Our law here (qld) changed late 2015 slightly for the better if I remember correctly.

Hey yes, I live in NSW. I think by "flick" they mean like butterfly knives. Also autos are certainly illegal...thumb studs knives, even flippers are fine. Bought plenty myself.

Of course depends on your local state. But here in NSW, you can have anything as long as it isn't double-edged, ballistic and as above, butterfly + autos.

Depends on your state, but generally they are legal to own. It's a different story if you plan to carry it around in public, although as mentioned you should be able to carry for a specific reason. Each state is different.

In QLD where I am, you are allowed to carry a "pen knife" or multitool. So, pretty much a slip joint or a SAK or something, or a Leatherman style tool. You can also carry a fixed blade if you are for example going fishing or for a specific task/reason. So if you want to carry a knife in your vehicle, also leave a fishing rod in there as well.

You are better off buying it in Australia. You can import knives but I have heard a few stories of customs confiscating knives, and not always ones that would be considered potential weapons to most people either. I have never had any problem buying similar knives online locally.

Ok nice, is knifesupplies.com a reliable website? They’re situated in Tasmania

I haven't bought anything from there, so I can't really answer that. I've looked at the site, but I've either found what I was looking for somewhere else cheaper, or they were sold out.

Hopefully this isn't against any rules here, but the places I have bought knives from are:
Survival Supplies based in WA(I think)
Gocommando in NSW
Nebo Knives in NSW (although they are expensive for some of their stock)
Cutting Edge Knives (some good prices, some are over priced)
Knife shop Australia (QLD)
maybe a couple others I can't remember right now

Ok, thank you. I’ll check those websites out

Have you asked Pete? He seems to love his Recon and American Lawman
