Hey guys I have lost my vg1 Recon tanto and can get an aus 8 or an sk5 version for the same price pretty much. I know the sk5 is a carbon steel so it will be tougher and has a hollow grind vs the Sabre grind of the aus 8 but I’ve found cold steels Japanese quality control and heat treatment of aus 8 to be pretty great but aus 8 perhaps does not hold an edge as long as sk5? It will just be used for camping. Thanks.

sk5 is a Japanese steel, and sk5 can take a lot of abuse.

The "Hultafors Heavy Duty Knife GK" is made from SK5 and it is considered virtually indestructible.

But as with all steels it depends on the heat-treat.

you can still get the Japanese made vg1 version if you want it for a really decent price. PM me and I'll tell ya where as the dealer isnt a paid dealer here but its a big legit one not some hokey hole in the wall deal place.

that aside...of those two choices i prefer the sk5 version. add the vg10 San mai or 3v versions into the mix and easy decision. in other words it wouldnt be aus8 or sk5.:)

Thanks mate appreciate that but I ended up with an aus8 one and I like it already. As people have said cold steel does a great aus8 heat treat. A 3V or old carbon V one is still on my list for next year!
