Is "REFINED" Linseed oil the same as "BOILED" Linseed oil? I picked up a small bottle of REFINED Linseed oil at a craft store (in the oil paints section) so i could finish a curly maple handle. After putting it on and letting it dry it has more of a satin like finish and is not making the tigereye effect like i remember BOILED Linseed oil doing. I sanded to 800 grit and I had some tigereye before i put the oil on but now it doesnt look like i have any.

Refined is used to thin oil paints, and isn't the same as BLO. Did you wipe the excess oil off, then let it dry, then add another coat, as is done with BLO? Could be it didn't dry.
I like wiping varnishes better. BLO/varnish/mineral spirits in equal parts. It dries a bit faster.

Thanks, i did wipe off the excess and let dry. It had some tiger eye while wet, but lost it as it dried, which i thought was strange. gues i will resand and get the BOILED linseed oil.

Terry, I'd just go over what you have already done with some extra fine steel wool and use it as a sealer for you next coat of the boiled linseed oil.

Sounds good. I do have some clear high gloss polyurethane in a small can, do you think that would work as well as boiled linseed oil?

I use Antique Dainish Oil wich is a oil/varnish I also us eBirchwood Casey's TRUE OIL thiese both are oil/varnishes that contain linseed oil. Acording to my artist friend here Boiled linseed oil and refined linseed oil are very different when mixed with oil paint any way. The boiled type does not dry the same as refined linseed oil and is a different colour. One is hot pressed the other is cold pressed and filtered.

Thanks. It was taking way too ong for the refined to dry (2 days and it was still sticky). So i went to another store and found some Boiled Linseed oil. Cleaned and sanded the other stuff off. the boiled linseed oil did seem to make the tigereye effect come out a little more than the refined stuff.

Thanks for that link, it was very informative. I will try some of those ideas on the next one i do. I still have a couple pieces of Curly Maple. :)
