I posted asking about WD40 on my blades,Can't find it cuz poor people can't search BF anymore:-( and someone said Rem oil was good, I'm just trying to find something thats Ok on all my knives, BMs, Spyderco's, S30V, Carbon Steels, Strider finishes and BM finishes too. Something that will lube the pivot, prevent rust and all that, I tried 3in1 oil and like you said it left a varnish. a thick one, I think it made pivots stiffer that they where before, SO....... Is good old Remington oil thats $1.75, in the green bottle good for everything knives, just trying to find something I can pick up quick and not have to order online all the time. Thanks

I've never used Rem Oil (on my guns or knives), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I use Hoppes #9 or Miltec. Hoppes can be found at any sporting goods/wallyworld type store, and Miltec is usually in stock at ACE Hardware stores.

I'm certainly no expert, but I've found Rem Oil to be a good light oil with some decent cleaning properties too. I use it for both lubricating and rust protection. if I'm more interested in lubrication, I use Militec-1 ( Militec-1 is not too good for rust prevention though).

I've stored carbon steel knives for months with a generous coat of RemOil and have never had a problem with rust. It evaporates quickly and leaves a light residual coating of oil.

On some of my newer slipjoints I'll spay a generous amount in the pivot area and get all the leftover gunk out from the manufacturing process.

I also use something called Birchwood Casey "Sheath" ( comes in a white spray can) , but strictly for rust prevention and mostly on my hunting rifles. As someone mentioned in another thread it smells awful, so it must work:)

If Rem Oil has any cleaning properties in it, I'd be careful before putting it on a damascus blade.

I know I am going to regret this but I gotta say it. I don't have a lot of higher end knives. A couple of red label BMs, no high dollar Striders or S30V blades, but I am willing to kick in my $10 a year to support this forum. I am not trying to flame you, but "poor people" comments and BM / Strider knives don't really go together.

I use WD40 for quick wipe downs or mineral oil where edibility is a concern. I probably need to upgrade what I am using.

Here is a link to you WD40 post.

Nuke, that's a helluva good point.

Rem Oil certainly isn't my favorite but I've also never seen it cause problems. Not sure how they got the PTFE in it since it's invisible (not visible particulate like most other ptfe oils). I suppose that's a benefit though, it shouldn't ever build up and make a mess of itself if overapplied. IIRC microtech uses it or used it as their factory oil for automatics. Its cleaning action is sort of like WD-40's, there's a thin carrier solvent that does that part which evaporates leaving an oily film. Despite the large teflon bits in it I still prefer Breakfree to rem-oil if I have to use something locally, just don't apply too much and it won't ever be a problem, and it doesn't gum though it will thicken a little. My favorite stuff is Weaponshield CLP, you'll need to order it but at ~5 bucks for a 4 oz bottle it costs about the same as the gun oils at the local stores and works better(smells like cinnamon too).

*edit* Shouldn't cause any issues at all on damascus, not sure what gave you that idea SPX??

yoda, there have been a couple of threads in the Kershaw sub about people putting different stuff on their damascus blades, and losing the pattern definition. I'll look around to see if I can find them!

I found Tuff-Cloth was very handy for quick wipe downs but in the field I generally use one of the alcohol pads I carry.

At home I use food grade mineral oil, generally lightly applied, except for high carbon kitchen knives, when I get more generous. :)

I keep the mineral oil on the kitchen counter, anyway.

That's a bit odd, I've washed a couple damascus blades with dishsoap and water to clean them after getting some food bits on them, didn't notice any lightening of the pattern. The black oxide from the etch process should stick a bit more firmly than that, musta been some badass dishsoap:eek:

Well you did flame me, You don't know a thing about me, My Striders and S30V Blades and BMs are old, and I bought them all at gun shows, Or where gifts, because thats all I ask for from anyone. and I want to take care of them. And I wasn't talking about myself in general when I said poor people, Just anyone in general, It wasn't like that before, with no seach, and it just makes it so people have to post the same thing over and over again, instead of just searching. And I wouldn't mind paying the measly $10 but(like it's any of your buisness) I just had a Baby and my credit cards are maxed out, and on top of that I am enlisting , so my wife seeing a $10 charge on the credit card for BF wouldn't be good for me, the married people would understand here. Thats why I ask about WD40 and $1.75 rem oil, so I don't have to order some super duper crap off the net. Get it?

Anyway, The Rem-Oil I'm asking about(there where different kinds, comes in a little green labeled bottle, with a yellow lid, For $1.75 and says REM-OIL with TEFLON LUBRICANT. and is really flamable.

And about the other thing again, when I do get my paid membership(soon I might add) it won't be a BASIC, it will be a PLATINUM. So that will pay three or so years of your basic.

I use the spray can , AFAIK it's the same stuff as in the bottle. You get 10OZ for about $5.00. I spray a little on a rag or Qtip and wipe my knives down.

I have used Rem Oil and it works pretty good. It is a lot cheaper than some of the others. Both the spray and bottle work.

Don't use WD-40 unless you are trying to clean out gunk and then clean out the WD-40. It is a drier and not a lubricant. It also attracts dirt badly.

I prefer Mil-Tec and Tuf Glide, but there are some others that I like to use that I received free samples and they work pretty well. Tri-flow, Slip 2000, etc. I have all kind of stuff that I have picked up over the past years that works.

None of them are set and forget--you still have to clean out the crap and the dirt and oil them up when needed.

For protection, I like using the Tuf Cloth and the Marine Tuf Cloth.

I've been using Rem-oil for a while now and it seems to work perfectly fine for me. I do not have any Damascus blades but from what I've read I would be leery of putting it on them, other than that, I'd say you're safe. If it's good enough for guns(which I've used it on for many many years) I'd say it's good enough for most knives.

Stolas223,

Congratulations, on the baby. As a father of 4, I really think my children are one of the best things in my life. Also, congratulations on your decision to enlist. The military can be a really good life. I know I enjoyed my Active Duty time as well as the Air National Guard I am in now. Which Branch of service did you choose. From what I have seen on the forums, there are several members on AD in the sandbox and else where and there are a lot of Veterans of the various Services.

Rem Oil couldn't possibly hurt damascus etching. Gun bluing is nothing but oxidation, and I doubt Remington would sell a product that removed bluing.

I use only rem-oil on my knives... It keeps the knife very smooth and does not gunk up at all... Its my favorite thing to use.... And for about 6 months now...
Matt

rem-oil works great & is cheap, microtech reccomends it for there OTF autos FWIW, and i like it as much as anything except for tuffglide which is probably 2 or 3X as expensive and a lot harder to get.
