Hi all, new to the forum. Does anyone know how to remove the black oxide coating from a leatherman Surge Multi-tool?

Ive tried multiple ways to remove that stuff, and i cant ever get it right. It always turns out really used looking. I hope you can get it off and make it look good, someone will chime in soon.

I am considering taking it apart and sanding each piece with some steel wool, but that is my last resort as I have never taken apart a multi-tool before and I have a feeling it will be somewhat tedious. Some type of paint stripper or rust removing solution would be ideal.

A 25%-50% hydrochloric acid solution will work, however you might want to ask a follow up question on how it'll affect the steel of your blade.

I have a stupid question: with all the work that it would entail and the uncertainty of whether the results would be acceptable to you, wouldn't it be easier for you to get the same knife without the black oxide?

+1 on that! I would buy the stainless version and just sell the black oxide one.

If it is black oxididation mothers mag and aluminum polish takes it off great. I use a felt wheel on the dremel at very low speed. Then hand rub a little. These are the last two steps to my polishing process. Not familar with this particular tool. If its some other coating like titanium nitride or teflon this method probably wont work as well. Those little round felt wheels get into some tight spots as well. Maybe you could avoid dissassembly but idk. And also this gets a little messy. Safety glasses are a good idea probably. I wear glasses and always get some on them

Sold it yesterday, wasn't worth the effort. Might get a different multi-tool all together, I'm thinking the Charge tti.
