Removing disc grinder paper

Hey guys, thought I'd ask the multitudes for some clean up advice. I hav a grizzly 12 disc grinder. Everytime I go to change discs it turns into a 30 min job. I've tried spraying contact cleaner on it after I attempt to peel it off to speed up the process, is there anything I can do to the disc as far as prep. to make the removal of the old ones any easier? Thanks.

Dave

Try WD40. It will make the glue gummy and it should peel off. Works for me! As for prep, I use a medium strength adhesive and it's a little easier to get off.

I use WD-40. Remove the used sanding disc, spray the metal disc with WD-40, let sit for thirty seconds then remove the goo with 0000 steel wool. I apply the steel wool while the disc is running at slow speed.
Works for me, Fred

Get yourself a heat gun or a really hot hair drier. Before you try to peel off the old disc, take the heat gun and heat it up really well. It should peel right off.

Not sure if you are using pre-glued discs or not. If you are gluing your own, go to a parts store that sells automotive paint supplies. Ask them for some 3-M Spray discs adhesive. It makes life easier.

Yep, like Roberty said. Heat the disk and the paper will easily peel off. A heat gun works...but I'm too impatient and use a propane torch on the back of the disk while spinning it by hang. When the disk is toasty warm, there are no problems.

Occasionally I clean off the adhesive with acetone...on a cool disk.

if my disc is on its last leg i'll grind a blade to get the disc heated up enough to loosen it up. i get some final use out of the disc and make removing the disc a little easier. mineral spirits works real good for removing glue residue and might even be cheaper.

This you can do but have to be careful. Actually, very careful. When there is a little spot of really stubborn glue, I turn on the grinder and use a corner of a scraper to peel the glue all the way to the center. Make sure you point the tip of the corner away from the direction of rotation. If you point it towards rotation, it can catch, which will damage your flat grinder surface and will put a jolt through your hand and arm. Once you have all of the glue in one spot you can just turn off the grinder and pull it off by hand.

I believe 3M may have quit making the spray version of the Feathering Disc Adhesive and now only sells it in tubes and cans. If you see some on a store shelf, buy an extra spray can.

I think it bears repeating what Robert said, that what one wants is Disc Adhesive, which is meant to pull off easily. Regular "Spray Adhesive" that one sees at big box hardware stores is contact cement, meant for permanent gluing. Wrong stuff, and if allowed to cure makes for a biatch getting it back off the platen.

I have searched hi and low for the 3M feathering spray disc adhesive with no luck.

We even have Fastenal and Applied Industrial Technologies reps come into the mill every day. I know them on a personal level and had them look into it for me. They could find nothing!

I found the stuff in a tube but haven't tried it. Have you tried the kind in a tube Fitz? I wonder how it works.

I just got a spray can of stuff from Super Grit and it seems to work well. I've only used it a couple times though.

Another tip. The best thing for getting the goo off of the disc (in my experience) is some stuff called Goof Off. It used to only come in small metal cans, but now you can buy it at Home Depot, Lowes, etc in just about any form. I just bought a bottle of Goof Off 2 in a squeeze bottle (non-aerosol).

Good stuff... but don't drink it or get it in your eyes ;)

Robert and Rob... thanks for the heat-gun tip. Why didn't I think of that!?!? lol :)

I recently got a tube of the 3M stuff from Mickley when I bought some of his Norax discs, Nick. I've only used it on two discs so far, but it works the same. A tiny bit more of a PITA to smear around rather than spray, but not so bad, and I don't have to go looking for a piece of newspaper to lay the disc on to spray it. :)

Peels on and off quickly, too. Something Mickley turned me on to with the Norax discs: since they are the same fabric as the belts, you can re-use them time and again. Nanc picked me up some thin plastic "cutting sheets" (look like place mats, but slick) at a $ Store and I just flap them on there between uses. Works great.

I also got a tube from Mickley and have been using it on my Don Fogg style steel sanding bar with great results on both the plain steel and leather sides.

I may be alone here but I prefer a tube to a spray anyway -- the less junk in the air the
better for my already problematic lungs.

My wife buys some stuff called Goo Gone. It is probably similar to the Goof Off that Nick mentions. I've gotten Goo Gone to get off some really hard to remove labels. The stuff seems to just melt adhesives away allowing them to be just wiped off with a paper towel.

Great stuff.

i too use the presticky 12 inch disc that i get from supergrit (its just up the road for me)
plumbers torch and they peal 90% off

little scratch pad and im ready to put the next sanding disc on

PSA disc's are horrible. They stick too good and are pain to get off. They are also expensive. Feathering adhesive works slick as can be. This stuff has enough tack to hold a disc in place and then the disc can then be peeled off, stored and reused later. I use round plastic cutting boards I found at a dollar store to hold the discs until I use them again. Fitz and I must shop at the same place.
3M does not make the aerosol version of their feathering adhesive anymore. Any where they can, they are eliminating aerosols. I talked to one of their reps about this directly. They replaced the aero version with a tube. Squirt it on, smear it evenly and let it tack up a few minutes. After that loading of adhesive on your disc, you should be able to stick on 4 to 6 different discs with out a new application of goop. Eventually the adhesive transfers over to the discs you have changed out or it just loses it's tackiness. I use 3m's adhesive remover as it works faster than anything else I've found. Time is money.
I have seen spray feathering adhesive in automotive stores. There are other brands than 3m making the stuff.

One of the great things about feathering adhesives is simply using a 9"x11" sheet of abrasive on a 9" disc grinder plate. Stick on the 9"x11" sheet and trim off the excess with a sharp knife spinning it around by hand. 9"x11" sheets are almost always cheaper than disc's.

If you can keep the disc from coming off on the glue you can use it for a very long time. I have gone thru a 25 piece box of paper before haveing to reapply glue. I also found a disc adhesive called franklin sanding disc adhesive. It works great and does not have the flamability of the 3-m. I also found a disc adhesive at NAPA auto supply. Their own store brand. I buy most of my stuff from industrial abrasives. Heres the link to the adhesive, http://www.riverweb.com:8002/70012.html.
