Removing super glue

What I've got is a slightly older (from the early 90's) case trapper that belonged to my grandfather. At some point the case shield fell out and he super glued it back in. This knife has the yellow handles, and he got some excess super glue on the handle. Is there any safe way to remove this with out risking damage to the handle? Thanks in advande for the help and advice.

Cured superglue can usually be sanded/scraped down and buffed. A solvent like acetone may attack the handle material, so test on a small area first if that route is taken.

I've thought about trying to take some very fine steel wool (000 or 0000) and working the super glue off, but if i were to try that approach, what should I use to buff the handle with so as to remove the marks left by the steel wool?

The glue is harder than the scale material. It should be sanded flat with 400 grit paper, then buffed with 0000 steel wool. You can then use a buffer with tripoli or green rouge, or hand buff with Simichrome.

Bill, thank you so much for your advice. I'll try it out and let you know how it worked. Once again, thanks.

I wouldn't want to touch the handles with something as strong as acetone. To remove hardened glue will take a significant amount of time if it works at all, unless you know the plastic used in that knife is impervious to it I'd keep the harsh solvents away. Bills advice on the sandpaper and buff is spot on. If you use a power buffer to finish just don't forget to use a very light touch, it's very easy to overheat and mar plastic on a power buffer.
