I really dislike most knife safeties and remove them or disable them. What about you?

Here's my Leek (with apologies to KAI) with the safety removed.

I was never a fan of the safeties on my Leeks. It always seemed to apply itself when I didn't want it to. I never did anything with them though, I wonder if it could just be tightened further in the unlocked position?

I had a cheap knife made by "Tiger USA" it had a safety on it. I took it off because I figured what would be the point in having a a/o knife if I couldnt open it one handed due to the safety. the safety may be for people with kids, or so other reason. But the safety wasnt for me so I took it off. But I would be a good thing for say a parent or someone who has visitors alot that have children.

It's been a while but I think the Leek safety can be tightened down in the open position.

The first Leatherman was great ,It still gets used .The next model, a bigger one ,had "safeties" .They were not well designed and I got a bad cut because of them .Any cut is rare for me !! Then I found I wasn't the only one who got cut with the big one whereas I never got any cut with the original!
Lawyer safety ? In any case dangerous.
A similar situation is found in newer S&W revolvers .Read what can and can't be done with the safety. It's downright silly.Again I think it's a lawyer safety.
I come from a time when you were expected to learn how to use your tools .If you didn't and got hurt - too bad.
Today it's always someone elses fault so you sue.

I don't like extra safeties in my knives (or lawyer-locks on my guns), in my humble opinion they are unneeded extra parts. I remove them or glue them in the open position (or tighten them with some thread sealer in the open position when there's a screw).

While I appreciate the fact that some manufacturer's put safeties on their knives, I for one never use them. The way I carry my knives, I'm not really too worried about them opening up on me in pocket.

I don't like them either. I either remove them, or lock them down somehow (tighten or even superglue). The Lawks and Auto-Lawks from CRKT are my least favorite.

I have a SOG trident and a cheapO S & W. Both are AO with safeties. The SOG would actually engage itself in my pocket making a quick opening null and void. I just superglued both in the 'fire' position. I would never use the belt cutter on the SOG anyway.

I don't mind safeties that can be ignored, but things like the Auto-Lawks just drive me crazy. An auto-engaging safety that forces me to use it is a terrible idea.

The inclusion of superfluous and incredibly annoying safeties is why I have called 911 and had a S.W.A.T. team sent to SOG headquarters. Arrest every design engineer there, and throw away the key. Public safety, yanno...

How funny...you have video I hope!

I did. I borrowed a video cam from SOG marketing, but it didn't lock up properly. I forgot to put the VID1 OUT safety on.

I plan to do a Lawks thread using my three James Williams samurai blade knives as examples of inconsistency. I have mastered the Auto-Lawks system and it may make sense in a purely self defense knife. Then again - maybe not.

The only blades I have that have safeties are my sog folders (Flash II, Aegis fullsized and Mini). I have never had them engage when I didn't want them to and for the most part I do not use the safety. I have carried them in situations where even the slightest chance of an unintentional deployment would be completely unacceptable. One place was one of those inflatable bounce house places for kids. Another, is at the gym. The Aegis mini is my gym knife and with all the jostling around I wouldn't want it falling out of my IWB carry and flying open with a snap frightening all the sheeple at the gym. I have dropped my flash II several times and the blade has flung open, so in certain situations the safety can be a good idea.

I bought a chive a couple weeks ago and have been carrying it on my keychain. I leave the safety on only because it rarely gets used and then I don't have to worry about it flying open while driving. Even though the AO is stiff and probably wouldn't let it fly open anyways.

That chive is a cool knife--I have one. You are right regarding the AO both the leak in the chive are 'firm' closers. The truth is I have never had any of my knives accidentally deploy.

I actually am a little flabbergasted that still so many knives are made with an extra safety, because it seems that almost nobody likes them. I find safety locks annoying, just as much out of esthetic reasons as of practical reasons. For example, the Hogue EX-01 would look so much cleaner and better without the extra safety (not even mentioning the ghastly "G-mascus").
