Since Ren Wax is so expensive, is there any other wax-based finish that anyone can recommend as a good alternate - something that'll help bring out woodgrain? Thanks.

i've often wondered the same thing. Ren Wax smells very similar to Johnson's floor wax to me. I've been thinking about trying out some Johnson's wax to see how it does.

Flitz makes a liquid wax, comes in a spray bottle for guns and knives. You can smell the carnuba wax in it. Works great, I've been using it on my blued guns and mags for awhile now, keeps fingerprints off them very well and leaves a nice finish with protection. It's called Flitz WaXX speed wax.

I use Butchers bowling alley wax as a final finish on my wood handles and on steel sometimes also, if I don't want it covered with oils.

Neutral paste shoe polish works as well or better. It's a lot cheaper, too.
Rennaissance wax does not hold up well on items that are handled.

Shoe wax is good and cheap. Or you can use some Briwax or just regular Minwax. Renaissance wax is expensive and is NOT a "magic elixir" wax that the price suggests.

Gracias! Glad to hear that Ren Wax isn't the be-all-end-all. Tempted to try the bowling alley wax. Sounds like neutral shoe polish might be the way to go though - is it good FOR cheap, or good AND cheap? Someone had mentioned in a thread that pipe wax - used for polishing tobacco pipes, works really well.

There's no need to buy any SPECIAL wax. Use neutral shoe polish, as Bill said, or Johnson's paste wax (floor wax). Both have carnuba, which is what you want. Many specialty waxes have beeswax also, which is softer and not as durable.
