Replacing an arbor and chuck on a drill press.

Ok so as you guys might know I got a used drill press. Turns out the chuck is really wobbly. So I removed it and intend to replace it with a keyless chuck. I can't find the taper angle anywhere. If I replace both the chuck and the arbor do I still need a specific angle? The press is a craftsman 137.229170, 17" floor press. I don't mind spending some cash on a decent chuck but I don't want to waste money on something that won't fit.

The arbor should be easy to remove, there is often a slot in the outer tube that allows you to hammer a small wedge through to knock out the arbor. I normally would replace the chuck and arbor as a set, but it isn't completely necessary. If the ground surface on the stub looks unmarred and uncorroded, then it is probably fine.

As far as what taper you need, you will need to measure the old arbor with a caliper and compare it to one of the taper charts you can find on Google.

Ok so it is a hitaci rj3-16l. From what I found its mt2, jt3. So problem solved hopefully. Thanks guys

Ive replaced both of my chucks in the last 6 months, both were 17" and neither of them had the key hole for the drift key. The arbor was part of the spindle so be careful.. I removed the Jacobs 33 chucks and put uberchucks on them. Love them.

I actually already have it removed. Both arbor and chuck. It did have a keyhole but I had no tool so I just tapped it down with a hammer and screwdriver. Didn't worry about it since I'm gonna replace em both anyway.

Don't worry the wedges I told you about are the KSO's of the wedge world. Basically just a vaguely wedge shaped piece of rough cast steel. If you change it out somewhat often, its better to make sure you have something that doesn't mar your machine, but you should be totally fine for one or two removals.
