Reprofiling vs. regrinding

reprofiling means to change the angle of the bevel near the edge. Regrinding usually means removing metal to change the shape, thickness or width of a blade.

When I use the term Regrind, it means changing the primary grind, whereas reprofile is just the edge grind. Toa dd to the confusion, adding a relief grind is bettwen the two, not a full regrind, bur thinning way into the primary, then applying an edge grind.

In my mind, grinding a knife is the most basic and, therefore, largest-scale aspect of shaping a blade. Profiling a blade is giving it the exact bevels that it will have. Therefore, regrinding a blade will take off a lot of material from most or all of the blade, perhaps totally changing the bevels of the knife. Reprofiling a knife will enhance or redirect the the bevels, but it won't be as significant of a change to the blade as re-grinding. In a nutshell, I think of reprofiling as finer, more detailed work to enhace existing features, whereas regrinding alters or completely changes the features to form new ones. hope this helps :)

I have reground many daggers and saber-ground knive to make them hollow ground. More commonly I just reduce an edge bevel down to 10 degrees per side. This reprofiling often produces a bevel that is 3/16-inch wide.
