How do you do resin soaking or epoxy impregnating? I'm thinking of doing something for blade handles.

Thanks,
Tim

I am here-are you?
How to:
1) get some GOOD clear epoxy, slow set.
2) mix it up, really well in a cheap plastic cup. I mix up probably an ounce at a time-depends on the size, of course.
3) warm it up with a heat gun-easy does it.
4) get a 10 cent "acid solder brush", sold for abour $14 a gross.
5) Use the brush to slobber the epoxy all over your handle.
6) Work it in well with the brush.
7) Add more epoxy, or wipe away with a dry brush, until it is even all over and as "wet" as you would like it.
8) let it dry horizontally-watch for pooling, bubbles or "sags" and stray brush hairs
9) Work on another knife!!!
Note: coat only one knife per batch of epoxy.

I have never "dipped" knives. Can't envision how you don't just end up with a massive mess. Maybe this is just a term, I don't know.

I demonstrated this technique at the Ashokan Knifemaking Seminar last fall-hopefully, they will invite me back next year.

Good luck,

RJ Martin

Hey all
I just started doing vacuume impregnating.
It cost me $40 to put the rig together and it works very well.
I used a pump from a old freezer and p.v.c. for the chamber.
I Can use epoxy,acrylic.polyester,urethane whatever.

You guys have to check this out.

I'll have to give this type of finish a shot. I'm always looking for alternative finishes which are not oil-based. I have used super glue as a finish which has worked pretty well, but since it sets so quickly it is somewhat cumbersome. I've finished both Bois D'arc (Osage Orange) and Padauk with super glue and the finish came out quite well.

This is leading me to a question. Not all woods require a finish due to their natural oil content. I just finished a handle of Kingwood. I used my buffing wheel with white rouge and it polished great with no noticeable residue/buildup. Do I need to apply a finish? Will this wood even take a finish? I'm not sure if this wood actually qualifies as being sufficiently oily to finish on a buffer or fine grit paper (400 grit or better).

Any experience/ideas with this particular wood or others and how to finish them?

IM doing this to keep the wood from shrinking more than as a finish.
I have some test knives that have bin in a dry case for 5 years and the impregnated handle is the same as the day it was finished and all the others have shrunk.

TIm: Use whatever you want!! Paracord, shoelaces, string, twine, Japanese silk. Remember, you're making YOUR Knives-you want to think about what you want here, not what someone else does. Try different things. If it will soak up epoxy, you can wrap with it.

Has anyone ever heard of using Elmer's Glue?? I thought I read somewhere about a knife maker using Elmer's Glue. I've used it for one small cord wrap on my Mini-AFCK's opening hole. So far it has held up great.
Just wondering.

BenchMade claims to be using a "Resin Coating" of some sort on their G-10 handles now. Said they started using it recently (BMST). Whatever that means right? Has anyone else heard this. It is floating around the BM Forum real nicely.
