Thought it might be of value to have some “Basic” threads about Res-C handled knives in one place for reference. Feel free to post links to your favorite Res-C and Basic threads.

FROM THE BUSSE COMBAT WEBSITE:

Resiprene C
(Think of it as an all-terrain truck tire with better chemical resistance)

Resiprene C was made famous as a handle material when it was used on the Busse Combat Basics. Resiprene C handles have all the advantages of rubber handles without any of the disadvantages. They are comfortable, shock absorbing, slip resistant when wet, and provide insulation from the cold. Unlike Kraton, Resiprene C is a Non-hygroscopic material which means that it will neither "take on" or "emit" fluids. This quality not only gives them unparalleled durability but makes them extremely easy to keep clean as dirt will simply not stick to them. It is impervious to salt water, petroleum based chemicals and is much more resistant to higher and colder temps than is Kraton. Resiprene C is likewise impervious to the powerful insect repellant, DEET. It is so amazingly tough and durable that Busse stands as the only company to have ever put a Lifetime Guarantee on a rubber handle. All handles are fully textured to supply a slip-resistant purchase in any grip configuration. So, whether you hold the blade in a saber grip, reverse grip, upside down grip, side grip, or whatever which way you are required to hold it for your particular application, you will be assured of having a secure hold.

I’ll start with Noss’s YouTube series on taking a Basic 9 to destruction:

Next is a 2017 thread about Noss--if you scroll through you'll find some good general Res-C discussion:

https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/noss4.1480094/

From discussion in the thread above: One of the most interesting things about the tests to me was how incredibly well the Res-C held up. After pounding on the FFBM (G10 scales) test knife with a 3 lb steel hammer a few hundred times, the handle rivets loosened up and made the grip unstable, with the slabs finally coming off altogether. But after the same treatment, the Basic 9 Res-C handle had only a small split which doesn't significantly affect comfort or control. If the blade were still intact, the knife would still be fully functional.

Here are photos of that handle, taken from all sides today (1/29/2020), showing the extent of the damage to the handle and its current condition:

Here are more threads on subjects related to Res-C and Basics from over the years…

On Durability and the Busse Warranty--

The Lawnmower Incident:
This thread by dogboye not only shows how tough Basics are, but is a great example of Busse warranty service:
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/a-riddle-of-steel.1499013/
(See better pics of the damage on pages 6-7 of this thread.)

OwenM’s Basic 5:
This was the first instance I can remember of a reported warranty claim on a Basic:
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/ok-i-killed-my-basic-5.187901/

On Rust Resistance--

A recurring question on the Busse forum is how rust resistant INFI is and whether it can be used in and around saltwater, including use as a dive knife. Here are some of my favorite threads referencing Basics and rust resistance:

Contender's Basic 7 dive knife:
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/aba-another-busse-adventure.203305/
INFI and seawater, including comments from Cliff Stamp:

Personal experience with a Basic 9:

On the Asymmetrical Edge--

For those who haven’t experienced Jerry’s innovative “Asymmetrical Edge”, popular on the original Basics (as well as on the SHBM), here’s resinguy’s excellent thread about maintaining that edge:
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/asymmetric-edge-resource-thread.747170/

HOGB8

Of course, a personal favorite of mine ;) is The HOGB8 Thread, which still holds the record for most views (over 700,000) of a Busse Combat Forum thread all-time:

AAAaaaaannnddd…Just for fun...

Dave Canterbury (Dual Survival TV series) serves up turtle for breakfast on a Basic 11 (which I’ve heard he bought personally at Blade Show 2010):

much thanks for the links

Can we post pics too???

Ya know, for reference.;)

PS: You know the B8/HOGB8 thread Better Be listed in post #2 aBove.

Post pics, threads, original material—anything you think might qualify as a nugget of useful, historical, performance-related or just interesting info about Res-C handled knives. General info or anecdotes about specific knives/experiences.

Meant to be a big-tent thread.:)

Thank you Very much, Will! This is something I’ve been thinking of lately. The AR has more than convinced me that I need some more of that sweet Res-C. Looking forward to see where this thread takes us!

All,

I was watching the NOS destruction test on the Basic 9. He mentions the steel is a "modified INFI"
What's that? Is that the SR-101?

Great resource Will, and thanks FOR EVERYTHING...especially for doing the heavy lifting on the greatest Res-C model, the Mighty B8LE ...

aka M-Infi...a different formulation of INFI, but some Hogs think the original recipe is better...I haven't noticed much difference personally in my usage, they're both way tuff enuff for most every need. I have noticed the newer infi seems a bit "gummy-er" when sharpening. I know---- "gummy--" it's a technical knife term ;)

Please explain the back story.... Did Will have something to do with the creation of the B8 LE?

surely ye jest, heheheheh...:p

The B8LE was just a twinkle in Jerry's eye before this ^^^ thread, it is currently the HogB8 thread, but it originally was the B8LE thread...peruse it <All :)> for enlightenment grasshopper, then draw your own conclusions.

Will, Stumpy, Tom, et.al. put the OG in "hOG"

...on a personal note, the B8LE thread was what lured me from lurking into a paid membership.

As I recall, modified INFI or M-INFI was the same as INFI except for no cobalt in M-INFI. Any difference in performance was said to be imperceptible; M-INFI was just less expensive.

PeteyTwoPointOne PeteyTwoPointOne , Great pics of your B8 LE! How do you like the mod for your thumb (I guess you could call it a thumb choil)?

Thank you

that blade is always on one of my packs when I'm hiking and it's on my truck bag when I'm driving...I think that says a lot.

but specifically the thumb notch makes it handle like a Res-C NMSFNO...I had Josh leave the shoulders kinda sharp and I've used it to scrape to good effect...it's useful and comfy...so to me it's great bang for buck utility.

Glad to see your questions were answered. PTPO and gk are on the case! I was a little busy with the sale last night.

I consider M-INFI to be INFI—performs the same in all respects. Jerry created the Basic line to market experimentally through dealers at high volume/lower cost back in the late 1990’s, and M-INFI was part of the branding of that line. Coincidentally it became associated with lower cost and, by extension, lesser quality. Took several years for us consumers to realize it performs the same—same edge holding, same indestructible toughness, same high rust resistance.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

The Basic 3, 5, 7 and 9 were marketed as M-INFI. Also a couple of models sold only in Europe—a Basic 4 and Basic 6 that I know of. These were not the “modern” Basic 4 and 6 introduced in 2011 as part of the “LE” (Limited Edition) line including the B4 (magnum and anorexic), B6, B8 and B10 (offered with or without choil). These LE knives were all INFI, as were the Basic 11 introduced earlier in 2010 and the Basic Bolo 13 which came later.

BUSY, But Good MBFAM! Headin' out to follow a Brittany around the pheasant club in the morning. Gonna be a rough day.:D

Hope all is well with you and yours.;)

Oh, THAT’s a rough day all right. Geez, I pity you.:p Yeah, fat and sassy here—all good. Hiked in the desert on Monday and went snowshoeing with Cheryl and our daughter Tuesday. No complaints!

Be lucky!:D:thumbsup:
^^^ THIS!!!

Got any Res-C stories Tom?;):D
