As many people know I can't resist picking up a new Wood Stove! That being said, the 5" Folding is not a newly released Stove, but I am always looking at new Stoves on the market. The Folding Firebox actually has been around awhile and I just never got around to picking one up. Until now!
My first production wood stove was an Emberlit. It served me well for years and I still Have and use it along with its new little brother the FireAnt!
Since then I acquired many other Stoves and one thing most stoves of this type have in common is they all have multiple panels/Pieces that interlock together to transform into a stove! When done using it to cook or as a heat source it disassembles back into multiple pieces and usually stores in a bag or case of some sort. Not an issue for me but I know many find that an issue. Losing a vital piece while trekking can render some stoves useless!!
Losing a trivet or worst a wall panel while in the back country would definitely cause problems! Not saying stoves with separating panels are in anyway inferior but its something to consider when looking at buying a Collapsable Wood Stove.
Then Here comes the Folding Firebox Stoves from http://www.fireboxstove.com
With hinged panels and still being a fold flat design its pretty safe to say its in a different class of stoves! Not saying it the only hinged stove because there are other stoves with Hinged panels like Tato's Element and Bushcraft-Essentials Bushbox XL to name a few.
The Firebox arrived in a USPS box and were well packed in brown packing paper. After opening the stoves surrounded by paper & foam I saw 3 cotton bags containing 2 Nano's and the 5" Firebox each sitting on its own Nylon case. I pulled each stove out and each had a business card inside.
The 5" Folding Firebox has many extra accessories which can be purchased separately like a Boil Plate, Grill plate, 2 extra Fire Sticks, extended Grill plate and adjustable Burn Plate.
After looking at the 5" Folding Firebox's Hinge assembly I inspected for sharp edges and found that all edges were clean. Nothing sharp enough to worry about at all! the only edge that felt even slightly sharp was on the grills center cut outs!

The Folding Firebox stoves panels are all hinged From the 5" Folding Firebox To the Small Firebox Nano! Even their Cube Stove is hinged!
Unfolding the firebox is just that. Literally Unfolding into a fully setup ready to Burn stove.
When you first get your Firebox its all neatly folded flat in its Cotton sack. Upon pulling the stove out I noticed it was held folded in close position by the 2 fire sticks that have hooks at one end that wrap around all panels successfully keeping it packed flat. To unfold the firebox pull the 2 sticks out of their slots and remove the ash pan which is held in place by the fire sticks. The pan its self also has a snap fit to help keep it snugly in place. The pan actually pops off by pulling it off or by starting to unfold the stove it forces it off. Once both the sticks and pan are off the stove literally unfolds. To lock things into place the burn plate folds down and snaps into 2 slots securely holding the stove open and ready for action. Its feels rock solid and it can easily handle almost any pot/pan you might have in your kitchen from a small diameter SS water bottle to the large and heavy 12" dutch oven!
Disassembly is just as easy just in reverse and placing the 2 fire sticks in each slot with hooks over the end to hold the panels folded nice and flat to fit perfectly in the Nylon case!
Details & Performance"
The 5" Firebox has no tapered walls commonly found in many stove designs. The reason from my understanding is to do with performance.
Expect quick startups of your tinder/fire in this SS Hinged Beast! The Firebox is designed to let as much air in (free flow) as possible so the Fuel can take as much air as it needs during the combustion process. My first time using it I notice how quick it started up and think the free flow of air through the well vented burn plate and side panels has a lot to do with that.
Quickly After adding in the usual thumb size sticks it took off in raging flames! I threw a my trusty test pot with 2 cups of water on it and watched for a while adding fuel when needed. There was very little if any smoke! It came to a full hard boil in minutes! I took the pot off and decided to add fuel to the point I couldn't fit anymore. I Let it burn out and cool. I wanted to see what would be left on the burn plate and if warping would occur. I wasn't surprised to see just a small amount of ash left over. The ash pan had a nice pile of ash. It used the all the fuel until gone except for what fell through the burn plate and suffocated in the ash on the ash pan. Excellent!
I sighted each panel to check for warping. Nothing yet but only time will tell as I only had one burn in at that time. I did burn it several times that week and still no warping or sticky hinges! I will keep updating this as I use it if anything changes, warps ect..
Hinges are all still smooth to date!
The Folding Firebox can also be used as a contained Campfire and with its size should do well as a heat source or if you want to just gaze into the flames fill it full of larger pieces of fuel and watch this beast breath fire!
"A little info about its Fuel options"
Beside Wood you can use an alcohol burner like those from Trangia or Evernew, fuel tabs, diy soda can burners, Sterno, wood pellets, charcoal briquettes, Candles or whatever you feel like.
This is where the fire sticks come in handy. Those aren't just limited to being Pot Supports but can be utilized as BBQ Skewers, be used to Move the stove around, adjust wood in the burn chamber (pokers) or adjust the ash pan. It can also be utilized as a support for Burners like the trangia burner at multiple levels like mentioned in the fuel "options."
"Overall Impression"
In one sentence... The all Stainless Steel 5" Folding Firebox is an amazing Beefy Fire Breathing Beast!!!
From the heavy gauge Stainless Steel Panels to the well designed Heavy Duty Hinges! Its a Solid Piece of Equipment that anyone looking for a simple yet Durable Wood Stove will Appreciate!
The Only gripe most people would have is the weight which is just over 2 lbs. its is not a big surprise given its large size but something to take into consideration. Not a problem for me but some might find it to heavy for extended backpacking trips into the wild but short trips or car camping the weight wouldn't be an issue! Besides weight, The Firebox is well made with attention to detail and more important function. For anyone looking for a wood stove for Camping, prepping,or just home use take a good long look at the 5" Folding Firebox and its accessories!
"Note"
Something that needs to be mentioned is the The 5" Folding Firebox is not a square! From videos and pictures many might get the impression that its square but looking at it from top down you clearly see its not. So what shape is it? Your guess is good as mine! It has sort of trapezoid shape or parallelogram kind of shape. It does not seem to affect the performance.
