I wanna get a Rick Hinderer Pen for EDC. I want it more for writing, but also can use it as a weapon should the need arise. At work, no knives or the like allowed, but a pen.....I use daily. I am getting one in Aluminum as I cant justify the Titanium price ( the price is very fair though, just not for me ).

SO, which one should I get and why ?? I like the smaller size of the investigator, but is it too small ?? Or is it the right size I am looking for.........Is the extreme duty too wide/fat to use from wrting comfortably ??

I may end up with both someday, but now, its Only One !!!

Looking for Feedback.....Pics always nice too !!!

Thanks In Advance.

I got the Investigato recently. Very pleased. I use it every day, it has become my first choice to note-taking, check-writing, and doodling. :)

I have one of the older larger pens, which makes a better weapon but is a less convenient size for writing and carrying.

congrats my friend. Can you do a small review and expand on the size? I'm also thinking 'bout getting one

Will do........Took some pics with what was in my pocket at the time to give you a good size comparison.

Rather than start a new thread, I edited the title and am doing the review in this thread.......Hopefully that's to the liking of the moderators for not making similar threads !!!

As for the Review of the Rick Hinderer Investigator Pen, here it goes:

I was torn when deciding on an EDC pen ( Investigator Pen OR Extreme Duty Pen ) and having past experience with Hinderer Knives, I know if they made a Tactical Pen, it would be top notch.

I settled on the Investigator Pen in BLUE. I got it from a Hinderer Dealer as they offer free shipping, so I saved anywhere from $5-$10 there. So it was a total of $60 to my door. It arrived in 4 days via USPS First Class Mail.

I was concerned that the size would be too small, I even went as far as cutting a pencil to the Investigator length so I could get a real feel of its size................When it arrived and I opened the package, even though I handled the pencil cut to size, I was still surprised at the Investigators small size.

The quality was top notch and of expected Hinderer Quality. The BLUE anodize was full and perfect. I did notice the cap has a little darker anodize, but from looking at other pics on the net, this seems to be the norm. The pocket clip has lots of resistance, so I don't see this falling from any pockets unless it catches on something. The screw holding the pocket clip on looks to be similar if not the same as the screws used on the scales of the xm-18's.

The Fisher Space Pen Refill is also of top quality and from doing research on the net, is outstanding. The SPR4B comes with it, but you can also purchase different refills in different colors and different points.

As for size, I mentioned its small. I took pics of it with what I had in my pocket at the time. The Investigator is shown next to my CRK Umnumzaan and my iPhone 4 in Otterbox Defender Case. Honestly, I don't carry my xm-18 that much and prefer my workhorse Umnumzaan. I love my xm-18, its just that its my SEDC ( Sometimes Every Day Carry ), not EDC............. With the pics, you should get good scale of its size. I also took a pic of it in hand. I wear size Large Gloves, so if that helps. I also took some pics of in in my hand in a fist-like hold. This shows that the point does protrude even with my larger hands. I know I would not like to be hit with it  Overall Size is: 4 1/2" LONG, 3/8" Width/Thickness

I love the Investigator Pen overall, but like with anything there is a negative. Whether this is just me nit picking or not, I do see it as a very valid point which I will mention.

For me, I dislike that there is Only THREE Threads to secure the cap, or secure the cap to the end when writing. When Holding the pen firmly, you only get TWO full rotations and the cap comes off ( either end ). Looking at the Extreme Duty and even the Titanium models, I see Hinderer makes them all the same. I was sitting here in the couch and was doing a little experiment. I had the cap on the pen to where it is screwed on all the way, just not tight and snug. I was only holding the cap. I began turning the cap back and forth and to my surprise it loosened up to where the body of the pen fell to the couch. I did this aprox. 10 times. And each time it fell to the couch. It ranged anywhere from 20 twists to 50 twists. I wear my pens on my lanyard at work. I did this test to simulate it rubbing, rolling against my clothing. On my lanyard, the cap is held tight, but the body will sway back and forth. If the cap is twisted on tight, I don't see it coming loose, but should it........??? Also, by tightening down the pen all the time, will this create wear on the threads over time ?? Knowing from past experience with other items of similar design, my answer is: yes !

I love this little pen, but hate the thoughts of losing it. I would Love to see about 6 threads and there is more than enough room. There are 6-7 threads inside the cap, there should be 6-7 threads on the body as well. This is the ONLY Flaw I see in this design. I have had the Extreme Duty Pen in my shopping cart several times, but due to what I see as a lack of threads to really secure the pen, I am reluctant. If Hinderer would put the 6 threads on for a more secure hold, I would probably have one in every color, and would even spring for a Titanium version as well, until then .....?

There are many other Tactical Pens out there that also have the Fisher Space Pen Refill and looking at their designs, have aprox. 6 threads to secure the cap on.

So there you have it. I really like the Hinderer Investigator Pen, but with the lack of threads to secure the cap to the body preventing loss, I am reluctant to buy another.

Enjoy !!!

Thanks much Nyefmaker!

I posed this same question recently on another forum looking for a comparison between the two models, as I was concerned about the size also. I really hadn't gotten sufficient response back yet. I was concerned about the extreme duty model being too "tactical" looking, as I am in and out of county courthouses and county/state office buildings a lot and have to go thru security checkpoints / metal detectors. My surefire pens don't get a second look.

I find that if the pen is too small that hand fatigue sets in very early. I have big mitts and a 5+ inch pen with somewhere around 1/2" diameter allows me to write for extended periods of time better.

It seems that most purchasers of this knife use it for note taking or other short writing exercises, and it is definately sized for edc.

Nice snag. If you have the time can you report back with your thoughts after you've had the chance to use it for a while?

thanks Nyef, very good information. I think the thread info is good feedback for Hinderer.
Nice pictures also, the size reference and hand shots really help.
and of course, you gotta love the umnunzaan :)

I guess everything is a trade off. I have an older model Extreme Duty Pen. (this was actually originally a Modular kubaton pen, but I bought a shorter middle piece to make it a more manageable size.) It comes with more threads on both ends of the pen. One of my complaints when using it was it took too many turns to remove the cap and affix it too the end. I have almost bought one of the newer models several times because of this. (I love writing with the pen, it's just annoying to use when doing something simple like signing a receipt.) I have been trying to justify getting one of the investigator pens to keep in my wallet...alas I am a sucker for Ti, and that's alot of money for 'another' Ti pen....especially when there are so many knives I need.

Looking forward to handling one at Blade.

I love everything about the pen except for the lack of threads. There is nothing worse than figiting to make sure its constantly there because you don't completely trust the security of it. This is something that Hinderer can easily rectify and I hope they do as I really see this as an issue for an otherwise great item.

I will do an update down the road after carrying it for a bit.

As Grizz said, I find the number of threads appropriate, I like that it only takes two complete revolutions to remove or reattach the cap. I have carried my Ti version for a few months every day now and haven't had any issues. My only comment would be that I have the knurled cap, I need to get one of the smooth caps, the knurled cap is too hard on the fabric it is clipped to.

Regards,

Rich

I run an o-ring in the groove at the base of the cap threads on my Ti investigator, it reduces the number of turns to remove the cap and adds tension when it's tightened so that it takes more force to loosen the cap preventing it from unscrewing in my pocket. It may help keep water out as well my first investigator spring rusted out, refill wasn't damaged and it works without the spring just fine.

most recent pic (o-ring on the back end does the same thing, locking the cap in place while writing):

The one you mention is the older version that I am looking for. I would rather give it a couple extra turns and feel more secure about not losing it rather than the 2 full rotations that means the body of the pen falls to the ground meaning.......LOST !!! Hope to find an older version someday SOON !!!

I use my investigator everyday at work. Its a nice little pen but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who writes a lot. Its a trade off of size(compact design) vs. comftorbility.
The pen comes with the bold fishcer space pen cartridge and can be changed out to fine or even different colors. Overall I like it and think its a great price for a Hinderer made product.

I just got the copper investigator today and I am having some trouble screwing on the cap to the back end. If anybody could help me with this that would be great. Thanks.

Something simple to check is the threads, inspect them closely to make sure there is no residual dirt or media from bead blasting left behind.
