Revisiting a very old friend - the original Spyderco Tenacious G-10

Everybody knows about the Spyderco Tenacious, G-10, 8cr13mov steel. Stories abound from years gone by about the legend of the Spyderco Tenacious - a legend, indeed. Well, this week, I reached back for a little nostalgia and pulled the old warhorse out of the old toolbox, and you know I tried to say, well, it's not as good as my high-end steel Spydercos and it's not the value of Ontario Rat-1, but the Spyderco Tenacious didn't care about that. It just did not care - I know that from the knife's performance this week.

By the end of the week, I have nothing but utter praise and respect for this knife. It's too bad that the days of getting this knife for about 37 bucks are long gone. I fully expect this knife to be discontinued at some point in the near future, as the price has crept up to $57.00 now.

I'm just glad and, frankly, proud that I still have mine and, from this point forward, it will always have a place in my edc rotation.

I think it's really easy to get swept up in this hobby and move onto the next big thing.

I remember in my teens when I carried a Kershaw for 4 years and never thought about it. Then in my 20's I got my first "high end" knife, a Benchmade 940. That started the spiral to where I now have to make an effort to carry a knife for a month and find myself always searching for the next.

My wife still regularly carries the Tenacious I got for $37. Great knife, solid heat treat. I sharpen it every few weeks, and usually spend a few minutes just deploying it, enjoying the action and ergonomics. while i have considered getting her the S35VN upgrade, there is nothing wrong whatsoever with the original.

I carried an original Tenacious for several years in my patrol bag. Cost $35. Still one of the best bargains I ever came across. If it wasn't partially serrated I would carry it still.

Funny this should come up.
I recently decided to get a new G10 Tenacious and was shocked to see how expensive they've become.
Granted, it's still relatively affordable, but the last one I purchased was well under $40 and now almost $60!
Even the FRN version is $50.
Now I'm stuck on the fence...

And yet there are those that keep telling me it’s all relative!?!🤨😯🤨

It may have been one of the earliest quality knives made in China, kinda opened the door for what we have today.
That said, I never bonded with it, had one for a while in its hay day, but sold or traded it years ago.
One can do much better these days elsewhere for similar money.

I like my Tenacious, I think they are very underrated. I bought 4 Sprints many years ago. I gave one to my daughter (green G10) and sold 2, but I still have the blue G10 model. I think it's a great knife, but I have a lot of higher ranking spydercos that I carry and use. I was using my blue one as a carry for hiking and camping, but even that one I didn't want to lose so I recently bought a used LW model for that. I like the LW model with S35VN steel but it is relatively expensive, getting close to what I've paid for some Manix 2 LW with higher end steels.
Edit-
I just received the LW Tenacious in the mail. I've been carrying a Manix 2 LW (S110V) and it was laying on my desk so I could compare them side by side pretty easily. I always thought the Tenacious and Manix2 were somewhat interchangeable being similar size, blade length and shape, handle shape. Closed I see that the Manix2 is about 1/4" longer and almost 1/8" taller. It is also enough heavier to notice. Open the Manix2 handle is about 1/8" longer. The blades seem to be the same length and similar enough in shape to be useful for similar tasks, but the Tenacious has more cutting edge and the Manix2 has a slightly keener point. Holding them as if I was going to do some hard cutting the Manix2 is slightly more comfortable because it doesn't have the handle cutout for the liner lock, otherwise the handles feel similar. I notice that the Tenacious LW has screws in the handle instead of rivets.

Never had a Tenacious, but I’m quite fond of the big brother, the Resilience. Big blade that surprisingly carries well in the pocket, even in shorts. 😅
