Rifle sling/swivel recommendations?

Trying not to make too many posts about my new rifle on here, but I was surprised that my searches didn't pull up much in the way of rifle sling discussion...

Anyway, I'd like some recommendations on a good rifle sling set up for my new 30-06(including swivels ... not that they need to come together). I want something that will allow for good carry over tough terrain as well as something that does a good job wrapping up when shooting with no rest. I really don't have any big preference as far as nylon vs. leather, etc. ... whatever works best and, all else being equal, whatever costs less.

Look at the super sling 2. I have it on all of my rifles and love how fast it is to adjust. I used it wrapped and in a kneeling position to shoot a caribou at 419 yards with my Weatherby in 300 Win mag. Just my 00.2 cents.

M1907 Rifle sling... Learn how to use it and you won't want another.

Can be used as described or as a "hasty sling" (twist your arm through). When used as described, your sling swivels don't actually have to swivel, and you can buy the more robust design that don't...

But, I really think you are putting too much time and effort in polling everyone else and too little time buying and shooting. Quality rifle, quality ammunition, quality glass, and a strip of leather hung at the butt and forearm. That is really all there is to it...

I think both polling and buying + shooting are good ... the difference is that the polling doesn't cost me anything. ;-) And I wouldn't be able to be out shooting yet anyway due to the pain that it is to get everything that you need at a reasonable price in my state.

I have a Turner national match sling on my 700 in .308, same as what hlee is talking about, little pricey but the quality is top notch. If you call Turner they have factory seconds sometimes that are $20 dollars less, mine is a second and I cannot tell why, usually its a leather discoloration I believe. If you do call them make sure they have something in stock, there is a wait if they build one IIRC, also most of the leather ones do take some time to break in. My swivels are Uncle Mikes NON quick release and can be found just about anywhere.

I just bought a Bass Pro Redhead standard camo sling for one of my kids' Remington 700. It's actually a comfortable decent sling for $10. I personally like the "cobra" shaped slings that have the sueded inside so they don't slip and are comfortable. I've gone through multiple types of swivels, but always find that the Uncle Mike's QR (Quick Release) are reliable and easy to use. I've gone through a few sets of different polymer ones, because the Uncle Mike's will squeak sometimes, but that is easily remedied by a couple of drops of gun oil. A lot of slings have the Uncle Mike's swivels already installed for a little extra. The stainless steel ones are good for the waterfowl guns, because they don't rust. Just my .02.

The best sling I've found is the Brownell's Latigo. It has a shooting loop that allows you to get into it very quickly compared to a military style shooting sling (Turner, etc.) and will allow steadiness on par with the military slings under field conditions. It's top-quality leather, beautifully made, and can be had bare or with quick detach swivels, which I believe are Uncle Mike's brand. It comes in 1" or 1.5" versions. It ain't cheap anymore, but I'd buy it again if I needed one. I have one on all of my rifles, even .22's.

I bought a really nice leather sling for my marlin lever action. Brass buckle and uncle mikes swivels. I found it on Ebay. Apparently the Amish make a selection of them. I'd bet if you did a search for "amish sling" on Ebay you'd find them.
Mine is 1 1/4" wide brown leather. Really high quality especially for the money.

I use Uncle Mike's QD sling swivels and a cheap 1" wide nylon sling from the clearance rack at Wally or GanderMtn (don't remember where it came from, only that it cost less than $10)
practice time, quality ammo, & primo glass are more important than the sling.

That Latigo sling looks pretty nice ... but not sure if I want to spend the cheese.

Yep, they are about twice what I paid for them these days, but I use a sling for a shooting aid as much as for carrying, so they are worth it to me. Midway has a Whelan (whelen?) sling that works well, but I can't remember who makes it; it's a well known company, just do a search on their site. It's much cheaper, but the swivels are extra.

In researching these, I actually noticed that I have a super sling on my shotgun with a mag tube extension. I bought it used and it came with. It has never been functional as it was too tight on the gun since it is so far from the stock to the mag tube and, as I figured out, is extended to its limit. Not sure why someone put it on there. I could never figure out how to adjust the thing ... now I see why--it was extended to its limit and could neither shorten nor lengthen. Took it off and threw it on my rifle. It is very quickly adjustable and, once adjusted, stays put. Wish it were a little wider ... I think it is 1''. But will give it a try. If I don't like it, maybe I will try the latigo sling.

Now I need a long sling for my shotgun.
