RIT Dye: Is is just for G10 only? Valox, Grivory, other synthetic scales or handles

I have been following a thread on RIT with great results on G10 scales by immersing in boiling water with RIT dye I believe. I would like to try this with a deep Maroon dye, but was wondering if it only works great with just G10. Has anyone tried this with other synthetics such as Valox, Grivory, glass filled nylon, etc. Does the material need to be "grippy" or can a smooth type material also work well for absorbing the dye?

Thanks everyone.

Just so you know, you wouldn't be able to do it with black Grivory because Dye can only make things darker and black is the darkest color.

Thanks I didn't think of that. Do you know if there is some product that will change the color from black to something else? I don't know if there is a way to "bleach out the color" of black scales and then add another color.

I don't think there is anyway to do that. If you wanted to, you could ask one of the handle makers on the Becker forum and see if they would make you handles in the color you want. :)

Works well on Grivory

Is that really Grivory on the Benchmade? If it is, it must be a light color to be able to accept dye.

Yes sir, according to Benchmade's web-site the colored griptilians are grivory and only the black ones are Noryl GTX. Mine was tan before the rit-dye. I have also heard that the scales are Noryl GTS that were coated with Tan color, but who knows??
here is a link to Benchmade confirming.

Thanks very much for the help. I wish there was good aftermarket support for mass produced scales for more folders

How well does the dye hold up? Will it actually penetrate G-10 or the other materials? Does it scratch/flake off? I am atually interested in doing this.

It soaks in pretty good. It will scratch with very hard use but it doesn't flake off
