Another fun project on the way....

Some time ago, i've found almost whole (but empty) warhead from 128mm HE rocket.

After few days, i returned to the area, and found whole engine chamber

These things were widely used around here 20+ years ago, but i never found one in this condition. There had to be some kind of fuse malfunction, so it didn't go off.

Whole thing looked like this:

And was used for this:

Since then, it was waiting in the corner of my shop. Finally i got some extra time, and started to work on warhead.
Material acts like high carbon steel and, under the hammer, it feels like one. Quenching in oil works great and i'm quite happy with results.
So, after some destructive testing on small pieces, i've decided to make two smaller test knives.

I used lower (and thinner) part of warhead to forge them.

And there was just enough material to forge two smaller knives.
HT on first is finished successfully, and i will continue with this.
More pictures to come...

Good work turning weapons into tools. Sorry to hear the material is so readily available.

Thanks. It's getting harder to find such things as time passes by.

I'm really happy with testing results, so i used some walnut to make a nice handle for this one.
It's thin and sharp as a razor. Guess i'll call it "pocket slicer".

Great stuff, Daado. :)

Incredible story behind that steel.

Sent via telegraph by the same fingers I use to sip whiskey

Thanks very much gentlemen.
That's the funny side of blacksmithing, i can hammer down weird materials into usable stuff :D

Beautiful! I feel lucky to have been close by when you posted these for sale. While i have a soft spot for walnut and hate i missed it i am very happy to be receiving the antler:thumbup:

Sorry you missed #1, but i'm sure you'll like #2 as well. Thanks.

Another fun journey, from here...

And it's one of main reasons why i like forging so much :)

This time, i tried differential HT, and it was fine.
Smaller one in antler, with hammered brass pins.

And bigger one, still waiting for handle.

It's hard to catch a hamon with my phone camera, so i had to play with the angle
