Romoving scales on Ranger knife?

Hi. I have a couple Ontario Ranger Bush Series knives. The blades are gorgeous but the scales are a crude affair. Can the scales be removed - I want to do some work on them. Thanks.
 
I'm going to assume they're not glued. Here's a picture from Google of some nice work.
