Ronin Katana, thoughts?

First katana? Or are you a collector? I tend to think Ronin are pretty darn good for the money, although they're hardly a substitute for a traditional antique or a really nice custom piece. Also a big fan of some of Hanwei's offerings, particularly the Tiger Elite, when you can find one.

In my opinion, the review you posted is very accurate. I have a Ronin Dojo Pro, and it is as described in the review. I am pleased with the fit and finish of mine. However, I have not done any cutting with it yet. That being said, I believe the sword is an excellent choice in that price range.

As for SBG, I have only ordered from them once (my Ronin katana), but I received the sword that I ordered, in a timely manner. I have nothing bad to say about them.

First katana. First sword of any kind actually. I understand this isn't a traditional katana due to the forging process and steel used but I assume in this price range that's the sacrifice you need to make. My understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that the steel in Japan was rather poor historically speaking, which is why they went with differentially hardened blades. Current steel is much stronger so a mono blade isn't as much of an issue.

I'm really looking for utility over tradition. Basically something sturdy that's a good cutter. Doesn't need to be fancy.

Thanks Greg, very helpful to hear from someone who has actually purchased the sword.
