Rope on the end of a knife

Alright I'll straight up admit it i am a newb so i figure i would ask...what is that string or rope used on the end of some of your guys knives ? It looks like paracord 7strand 550lb ? I dont use pocket clips so im thinking a 2'' piece on all my knives would work

It's called a lanyard. They make extraction from the pocket easier, as well as the knife easier to grab with gloves. Some paracrod is reflective and/or glows in the dark, which makes a knife easier to find in the dark or snow. Finally, paracord is a useful survival tool, so some people add it to their knives for use in case of emergency.

It's a lanyard typically so when heavy chopping it doesn't fly out of your hand and you A) loose your knife B) hit yourself with the knife and get injured. There are proper techniques to using knives with anything else. I put one on my little crucible folder even(maybe I'll post pictures) that I use in my warehouse on a daily basis just cause it's easier for me to yank out of my work pants with the paracord on the end.

Also if you are not aware you should not be putting the lanyard around your wrist, it goes around your thumb

The use is adornment, and carrying your cord in a compact way. You can carry 15 feet of rope in a few inches of a lanyard. It also helps with grip and purchase. Plus, it helps kill the time.

I think most people use em becuase they like the look it adds t the knife. I personally am not a lanyard guy but ya never know, one day I may jump on that wagon.

I like to use short lanyards on small knives, where only a 3 finger grip is possible, the lanyard gives you something to grip with your pinky finger, and makes it easier to remove a knife from deep pockets. On a larger knife it is common for people to have a loop around the wrist, in case you loose grip during spirited chopping and the like.

Well i am at the station waiting for the lanyard bandwagon to stop by :D
Is there different diameter paracords ? And how does one braid it so nice:thumbup: @ Yo Mama that braid is just beautiful !

I would really like to be a lanyard guy but I'm just not. A few years back I bought a Starlingear bead in hopes of joining the dark side. Nope. No go. Ive made myself carry a Sebenza for a couple days with the lanyard. The only use it had for me was easier pocket retrieval which i don't need. I don't like them hanging out of my pocket or off a knife in general. They just get in the way. I would like it if there were a lanyard attachment on my iPhone though!

Another reason why (unsealed) para-wrapping is only for show!

not just for show if you happen to drop it in the animal or if you have a full height sheath. i was just saying dont get upset if you spent alot of time on an intricate lanyard that you may have to replace. paracords cheap, use it, cut it off, replace it.

but i do agree on the wrapping part, not a fan of that.

That's called a double cobra knot. It's actually really easy to do once you get the hang of it. I've found myself doing it without even looking when I carry around a piece of cord :p

Look it up on Instructables. That's where I learned it. It's a handy knot for making lanyards and straps. Variations of it can use extra pieces of cord to make the knot wider for straps and belts (I'm wearing 90 feet of cord in a side-by-side cobra weave belt right now!)

I just tuck my lanyard into my pocket. I just push it down onto the knife with my thumb when replacing the knife into pocket. Lift out the lanyard with same thumb and pull on it to remove my Sebenza. I don't like to pull up on the clip or pinch the knife with thumb and forefinger to remove it.

I find that I really only like lanyard on three types of knives: Folders with deep carry pocket clips, knives with 3 finger or less grips and woodscraft blades.
With folders like the Kershaw Cryo or a SOG flash one where absolutely none of the knife shows in the pocket I generally add a small lanyard so I can retrieve it better.
On small neck knives or folders where The handle can only be griped by a couple fingers I often add a lanyard to give a little more real estate to hold on to. A good example of this is my Boker Gnome which is a 1 1/2 finger handle. I put a paracord lanyard with some micarta beads I made on it so that I have a full hand grip.
On woodscraft blades I put a lanyard that I can wrap around my wrist as a safety strap in case the blade pops out of my hand and so I can dangle the knife while doing something else.

I like short lanyards on small pocketknives. If the scales are shorter than your hand, the lanyard gives you additional grip on the knife. Here is an older pic of a few of my lanyard-equipped Spydies.

I wanna see the belt ! That's very interesting

No, real paracord is generally the same diameter roughly 1/8"-5/32". It is short for "parachute cord Type III" which is military specified to have a minimum of 550 lbs breaking limit and is an external shell containing 7 inner cords made of 2 separate strands.

+1 this is the biggest benefit of a lanyard for me. Especially with a deep taco style sheath..

Will 5/32 fit OK through the hole of my boker Kalashnikov 74 & spyderco tenacious and resilience ?
