Hi All. Forgive me if I am calling something the wrong name. This is all brand new to me.

I very much want to make a couple of knives for my use however I don't really want to get too deep into knife making set up. I have a belt sander, mill, leatherworking tools, anvil and a good selection of other metal working tools at my disposal any way. the one thing I don't have is a forge. I dont' really want to build one just to make 3 or 4 knives. My question is this.

Would a propane or mapp gas rosebud be able to produce the kind of heats needed to work a blade, or am I gonna have to actually build a forge. I would rather just get that kind of set up, as it's something I can use at the shop after I've built the knives.

I saw somewhere where a guy had used an old steel wheel rigged up for an air blower to blow through the bottom. Would something like this work good as an alternate to the rosebud?

Just build a small propane forge and make some knives. You will more than likely get hooked and make several more. A forge can be very useful for other things to like scaring little kids and the neighbors cat.

Cool. I'm gonna make something like the bean can forge. I just ordered some cerablanket.

I have a piece of 8"diameter Ductile Iron pipe. Do you guys think it would make a good body for it?

If you plan on using something like a propane or mapp gas torch for the heat the 8" pipe will be much to large. Your burner needs to match the size of the forge.

I kind of though that. However I figured I would insulate the hell out of it and that would take up a good bit of space. I'd just like to leave enough space to fit a decent hunter blade into.
