I was going through some boxes at my parents' house today when I found what looks like an old victorinox waiter. I Asked my dad about it, but he coulden't remember much but that it was probably from the 80's or early 90's. The odd thing about it is that on the base of the blade is stamped "Victorinox / Switzerland / stainless / Rostfrei" I am guessing rostfrei means rust free, but I nhave never seen another vic with this stamp. Any info about it? Did they stop doing this after a certain time, or is this only found on this specific model?

My first SAK in the 1970's had that same wording on the tang. Mine was a Spartan model, and I had it for EDC for over 20 years. When the red scales fell off I sent it to Victorinox and they fitted new ones for free. The knife was then upgraded, as the original scales did not have toothpick or tweezers. Finally the springs died and I retired the knife in favor of a Tinker, since the Phillips driver is a lot handier than a corkscrew for my lifestyle.

So I am guessing that the wording you mentioned was common at the time. Great affordable pocket toolboxes, they were, and are.

While this is not one of the first knives that I've owned, its the oldest still in my possession. While fishing with my brothers and cousin at a lake in NJ about 40 years ago, my cousin JoAnne found this knife and gave it to me. It had about 1/16th of an inch broken off of the tip of the main blade. You can see my 9 year old "fix" for the broken tip. This one is still in my EDC rotation...

Ya, but i wondered why they used it on this knife, its not on any of my other 3-5 sak's

I would say it was marked on this one, but used on all of them. Rostfrei, surgical steel, whatever.

The blade is so thin it will slice great anyway. And you have a stronger knife for stronger tasks don't you? ;)

It's just the older marking. I have several SAKs from the 80's and 90's with the same markings on the blade.

Some of the new SAKs have it too. My Stayglow Rambler is marked "Victorinox Switzerland Stainless Rostfrei" on the main blade.

Amazing that they can get all that text onto that tiny bolster...
