I've owned about a half dozen Rough Rider pocket knives. I've always been amazed at the quality of knife you get for the low price tag. Every one of them has been put together well with above average fit and finish. Well, I finally received a bad one: The Lockback Trapper.

It's kind of a pretty little knife and the lockback feature is unique
It has a few fit and finish issues that I can overlook for the price

Except, the lockbar is cut at an ugly angle and isn't fit very well
Worst of all... *BEWARE* it doesn't lock!!! *BEWARE*

I'm not bashing the brand, I have some Rough Riders that are real gems. However, I think it's good for the community to celebrate the good as well as point out the bad and the ugly. I'd like to hear other people's opinion of this particular knife if you happen to own one. Perhaps mine was just a bad example.

I've had a few RR's thus far and the quality has been pretty decent in all of them...but some better than others for sure. I have the lockback hunter in the same amber jigged bone trim as yours but the f&f is a bit better than what you've described...actually a pretty decent little lockback. My Coal Miner Half Hawk has probably the best f&f of any of them and the Razor Trapper probably the worst (not terrible just not great). All things considered though, it seems like you may have just got a bad example.

Sorry you got such a bad one, John; that's way less than ideal!:(
I've had lots of Rough Riders, more than 40 I'd guess, and their functionality has always been everything I'd ask for. I have had several RR knives with what I consider cosmetic issues, usually related to dyed bone covers that were badly mismatched, or the bone didn't absorb the dye uniformly, etc. (I think it was a problem only on some of the smooth bone models IIRC.)

Yes, I have some RR knives that exceed the quality of my Case knives and are approaching the fit and finish of my GECs.

John, they're supposed to have a lifetime guarantee, so contact SMKW to find out about sending it back.
Seems like a hassle for such a cheap knife. I will probably just throw it in the kitchen drawer and use it for dirty work.

Thanks GT. I've also grown used to getting a good product from RR, I was kind of surprised to see this one falling so short of expectations. I'm willing to overlook the little finish issues, but a lock that doesn't work is no bueno.

You could do another giveaway "Rough Rider with an Angle to the Dangle".

As far as sending it to SMKW, send them an e-mail describing the problem with the knife and include the picture you posted here and ask them for a replacement without sending the subject knife back because the postage involved for both you and SMK doesn't make it worth while to send it back. They just may send you a replacement. Follow up the e-mail with a call to customer service.

Ed that's a great idea for a GAW name.:thumbsup::cool::D

These are the Rough Riders I've owned they all have been given away now but the only issue I had with any of them was the Camp Knife was way past a nail breaker.
