Is there a source for tubing where the outside is round, but the inside is square? I was thinking something like 1/4" square in center, and up to about 1/2" round on the outside. I haven't finalized exact dimensions. It could be a tubbing, a quality cast part, or even something machined for one purpose useable in mine. In the application in question I only need maybe 3/4" in length, so I could saw it off to fit, or use an already existing section. Stainless would be perfect, but carbon or something else of reasonable durability would be fine also. Any leads?

Thanks

It just hit me, I will have to look it over, but I don't think a socket wrench component will work, but I may haunt the local hardware.

The only way I can figure anything like you want, is to place some square tubing inside some round tubing, or drill out some round stock on a lathe and insert some square tubing. Or maybe have it forged? You want thin walled?

You'll never find something like that on the market. Since you only need a short piece the easiest would be to have it cast unless you would want to file the square hole. Get 1/2" bar of stainless, drill a 1/4" hole and file the hole square.

Casting a piece like that would be a piece of cake as they say.
The only problem is the amount of pieces you want. A small piece like that would end up about 28 pieces on a tree and could be cast in any common stainless with little problem.
We do many parts about this size -- mostly muzzloading breech plugs in 1020 and they turn out just fine.
Here is hoping you have thought up something that will sell well. If we can be of any service please contact us at hawks@bitstream.net
Good luck

Any local machine shop should be able to broach a piece like that for you in about 5 minutes.

yeahup what Jeff said or the file job like Mete said.

get a 1/4" square tapered file and drive it home..
wear your safety glasses..

Thanks Guys for the ideas. Sadly, not a volume proposition, just hoped there was a simple zero work way.

Graymaker, do you figure one can just drive a file through the hole, as with a nail, is this a room temperature proceedure?

yes
just drill your 1/4" hole first
use a coarse a file as you can get.
it's almost like mortising in wood
you may have to work it just a little to clear the filings
from the file.
it's as close as you'll get to broaching it like Jeff said.
you'll be pushing instead of pulling.:)

Just a quick thanks Todd,

I've been looking for internal hex sleeves for awhile now for another project.

You saved me.

Thanks Again,

Eric

Available in many sizes either mild steel with or with out threads and pre-hardened steel without threads. I thought they also had longer sections of mild steel square ID round OD tube but don't see it in the new catalog.
