rubber drive wheels for belt grinder

Does anyone know a source for a 4" diameter 2.5" wide rubber drive wheel for a 5/8" shaft with keyway and set screw?

It's from a KMG horizontal belt grinder. Whatever the rubber is on the wheel, it's not held up very well.... it's become gummy and is crumbling. I'd like to find a better quality.

Thanks

Sunray Inc should be able to get you a poly wheel in those dimensions. I imagine CRC (contact rubber corp) would also be a good (though probably more expensive) choice.

If it’s from the Beaumont horizontal it’s used as a contact wheel as well as a drive, I’ve also heard from quite a few makers rubber drive wheels don’t slip and track better.

Still like to test that

I’d like to find the same thing. I wonder if anyone makes tires for them like they do for bandsaw drive wheels? I think a replaceable tire would be a better option in the long run.

Any reason it has to be rubber covered?
I have the same machine and swapped out my contact wheel for the rubber one so I could have the option of using it as a contact wheel, which I do use it but not very often.

The rubber has no crown and the tracking is horrible on this machine. It's laughable.
I've built up the middle of the rubber drive wheel with electrical tape to create a crown.
I finally read this machine (tracking) works best with 1x48 belts, split the belts in half.
I'd be curious to hear from a maker that is having good tracking success with this machine because it's really bad for me.

That sounds like a mess. There have been a number of stories on here @Matthew Gregory regarding KMG tracking issues. It most likely isn't the drive wheel that is the issue.

Thanks... I'm aware of Sunray and CRC - was hoping to find an "off the shelf" wheel. Although custom may turn out to be a better option, as the KMG wheel is pretty soft.

Yes, it's used as both the drive wheel and as a contact wheel.

Tracking is not great on mine either, but for what I use it for, it's not too critical - profiling work on folder springs, folder blade tangs (fronts, kicks and closing points) and blade spines.

I personally prefer all Rubber Wheels on my grinders, Drive & Contact! No slip! Idler wheel can be metal——————-Check out the www.knifedogs.com / USA knife maker supply site. He use to have a assortment of Rubber coated wheels. Should be worth a look!

PALADIN store on AliExpress does not stock this wheel, but they say they can make one for $66 including shipping (to Mexico) Delivery in 20 to 40 days.

USAKNIFEMAKER does not offer this wheel on their website

FWIW, this is a standard size that's available in the SunRay online store, though keyway and setscrew options do add to the cost. Cost runs about $65. That said, you do need a minimum $100 order, so you'll either have to get two, or add something else in that range.

I contacted Sunray - it's not exactly a "standard size" because of the extended hub. Quoted price for one piece is about $81 plus shipping; three to four week manufacturing time.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me?

For a contact wheel, I'd prefer rubber, but I do run a 6" poly coated drive wheel from sun-ray on my 3hp TAG-101 (helps mitigate power loss from belt slip), and love it.
