Running with knives...

Well, I started running on a regular basis a few months ago, and obviously I had to carry some edged tool. I run through a bunch of local reserves/preserves/wildlife management areas, along with the roads, and it can be fairly isolated at some points, so having a knife available is pretty reasonable (not that I don't have a knife of some sort on me 95% of the time anyway). Of course I have been struggling with what knife to bring. I have tried a few different folders, some with clips, some without. The Spyderco Delica worked pretty well for me, until I changed to actual running shorts. These have a built in liner and a couple tiny, tiny, pockets. Like even a two layer 91mm SAK was a tight fit. I had this in the back of my mind for a bit while browsing the forum, and then I saw something that caught my eye on the Pay It Forward thread! A Buck Paklite Caper. It's basically a super lightweight fixed blade... I thought, hey this could work. So I claimed the Buck from @McFeeli and then went to search the web for a better sheath, because, unfortunately, the one that come with the Buck is pretty bad. I found a somewhat local craftsman who was selling sheaths for the Paklite Caper! Everything he had listed was vertical carry, but I wanted to carry horizontally, so I contacted them and they made a sheath to my specifications. All of this to say-> I now have an ultralight budget fixed blade setup! (I just received everything today, so I haven't actually run with it, but boy does it seem nice!)

That's the backstory, now everyone's seen mine, what are those runners out there carrying? Post some pics!

I run Cross Country at my High School and I carried my Finn Wolf everyday until practices were moved to the school. The easiest way for me to carry it was inside the waistband slightly behind my hip. As long as your pants are tight or they have a drawstring the knife doesn't bounce around or change position. With the knife placed slightly behind the hip it doesn't impede any movement and you can even sit down and not feel any discomfort. Your fixed blade setup looks nice, but I would highly recommend trying a folder.

Sounds good, but I pretty much have to carry my waist/hydration belt, and I know a folder would irritate me sandwhiched underneath it, and I don't trust a pocket clip to stay in place on the outside. Your solution would probably work for most people though.

Spyderco Pacific salt iwb right hip.

Nice! I need to get one of the salt models one day!

Nice thing about a big fixed blade some thug sees it and knows, you might hurt him if he try's to jump on you.

I've started running/working out on a regular basis recently as well. When I go running I always have my Benchmade 940-1702 clipped inside my waist band. I barely notice it's there.

Very cool looking sheath and set up.

So please don’t take this as criticism but rather a suggestion for next time.

Why is he sheath way larger than it needs to be? Especially that little extra orange tab that juts down from below where the front finger choil is when the knife is in its sheath? I find sheaths like that are fine when standing but start poking into me when sitting. Of course I doubt you do much running sitting down.

I tend to much prefer Taco style sheaths vs Pancake style as yours is.

If you look at the second sheath down from the top and the bottom sheath you can see how much extra plasic you can trim off the total footprint of the sheath.

I don't know how you IWB guys do it! I think any knife would irritate the hell out of me carried that way while running, but it seems to be pretty popular, at least in this thread:)

I am not at all offended, but I think the pics don't really show the whole deal. Most of the "extra" is to accommodate the belt clip. That is why there is a little "tab" on the bottom, and extra material above the knife. It is a taco style too, basically the bottom is open and the top folded over. Less to your point, but I didn't make the sheath either, but I did actually remove some excess material here and there.

I find that it's actually not too bothersome at the 5 o'clock position. It's definitely not the most comfortable way of carrying, for me that would be RFP. However it beats having your knife bouncing all over the place and potentially falling out/getting snagged on something.

It also helps that the G10 940s are pretty light.

Benchmade Bugout is very light weight and a good size when I'm out and about either running or on a bicycle.

Yes I saw from the shot that shows the back that that little tab helps accomodate the clip. However I wonder if maybe a couple of rubber pull the dot loops might have been a more comfortable design.

That’s not a taco sheath...it’s more of a Quesadilla!

Now I'm curious... what are "rubber pull the dot loops"?
And I am more of a burrito guy, but I don't think that's a sheath option!

Sure it is. It’s the Gaston sheath. You just shove your knife in a tube sock and stick it down your pants.

These are Rubber Pull the Dot loops. These and Static Cord are my favourite way to carry fixed blades. Low profile, flexible and comfortable.

Btw they are called pull the dot because on the snap there is a dot on one side of the circle. It will only unsnap if you pull the rim of the snap under that circle. If you try to pull the snap straight off it is locked in place. It provides good security against them coming undone unintentionally.

Hey those are pretty cool! I actually wanted a belt clip that I could attach to my waistband when I am not wearing a belt also so the rubber pull the dot loops wouldn't work for me.

Spyderco g-clip. That is how I carry all my edc fixed blades. Unlike the clip you have now, it doesn't require that extra tab on the sheath. It also works without a belt, though not as good, I doubt any sheath clip is as good without a belt.
