s30v vs s90v

S30V will be easier to sharpen in general, but S90V will hold an edge for longer while not being that much harder to sharpen.

That also depends on who you get the knife from, heat treament etc.

Given a choice between the 2 steels everything else being the same I would choose S90V.

if you sharpen steel yourself, choose s30v. s30v is tough to sharpen. s90v is even more difficult to sharpen. if you send them to the manufacturer to sharpen, get s90v. it will hold an edge longer and it will not matter to you how long it takes to sharpen. :D

S90V isn't too much trouble as long as you have some diamonds, or even a rough grit $10 Aluminum oxide utility stone. Just don't start out with a medium grit stone, grind on the lowest grit possible until you are sure you've reached the edge.

Jon has pretty much nailed it. For 'practical' purposes, S30V is a great steel. For those that are going to put their knives through living hell, S90V will survive the experience. I have put a polished edge on both types of steel and you don't need diamonds, just some time and patience.

S90V is also more expensive for the most part. I do not see too many makers using it these days due to the cost of the raw material as compared to S30V IMO.

I wish they would make more knives in S90V, its a great steel! I have two Spydies in this steel and they are not difficult to sharpen. I use a Sharpmaker.

I've missed the S90V boat for the most part. I had a user S90V Mili for about 3 weeks and I ended up giving it back to the owner. Great steel indeed, I almost kept it...lol

reprofiling a S90V edge takes a long time and has been the toughest to reshape so far. S30V by comparison is a breeze.

But when you finish, it's worth it. You can thin out the edge and it still holds that crazy sharp edge for a long time.
