Been trying to get on for a while and finally got the chance to grab one. I have to say it's been worth the wait. Already had a Sage 5 so i knew what i was getting into. Side by side the Sage 3 is a little bit longer. According to the Spyderco site the Sage 5 has a 2.62" edge length and the Sage 3 is 2.72"

Of course the main reason i wanted the Sage 3 was for the bolt lock. I was just expecting something similar to the Manix 2 ball locks, which i do like. I was pleasantly surprised the bolt lock was much easier to actuate even with just the thumb or index finger.

I have to say right now i prefer the Sage 3 over the Sage 5 not only because of the lock but also because of the cubic CF style.

I've been back and forth on the Sage 3 more times than I can count. It's smaller than I want in a knife I plan to EDC but on the other hand I really want to try the Spyderco version of the Bolt Lock. The only Bolt Locks I have are on some old school Gerbers.

I got one a month ago and posted about it. Still carrying it quite a bit. Stiffer than an axis lock, not as stiff as a ball bearing lock for me. Very nice knife that seems under-rated here. I know some don't like the scale pattern.

The only criticism I have is the height of the knife. It's actually just barely taller than a Manix. So it doesn't pocket quite as well as I'd like. I groaned when I first got it. Don't even notice it now. An excellent EDC knife. I'll catch my self playing with it - the blade action is just excellent and it will easily drop shut if you want when you release the lock. It could be tightened up to have a little resistance, but I've left it as-is.

One of the few Spydercos that you can actually flip open by flicking your wrist... new level of playing with that model!

Was in the same boat as you, I already had a Sage 5 but wanted to try the Bolt lock. I've had a bunch of Benchmade axis locks and even some Ganzo/Firebird ones. They are all gone. Stuck with the ball locks of the Manix2s. But i really like the Bolt Lock of the sage 3, the tension is not as light as the Axis lock but much easier to manipulate than the Ball Locks.

I agree, but i've also gotten used to the Manix width so i don't mind it. It's been taking the place of my PM3 when i want to carry a smaller knife.

This thread finally pushed me to get a Sage 3, after they were disco'd, of course. Waited around until I found one being sold here at the old retail price.

Holy crud, this is an incredible knife. Not great. Incredible.

Decent steel, that lovely Spyderco wire clip, slim, lightweight, great-looking scales and the incredible bolt lock. Done with Taichung quality, it's nothing like my old Gerbers. Smooth and easy with a fall-shut action.

I think a lot of us, myself included, missed out on a real gem. So glad I picked one up.

The Blackie Collins Bolt Action lock was really a fine offering to the knife industry. The Sage 3 is slightly wider due to the requirements of the lock. Peter Gerber was really concerned about the "flip" when they first came out. A good find. I hope you enjoy them.
