Sage 5 vs Sage LW

I'd like to know if the Sage 5 Lightweight has a better action than the Sage 5? Tha action on my Sage 5 was quite stiff. A Lw version is a bitt different and has bushing on the pivot. Any experience with these two? I'm interested only in the closing action, nothing else. Drop shut without any bladeplay?

Actually if you get a new CQI Sage 5 carbon fiber it has the updated pivot bushing and is just as smoothly as the lightweight. I sold my pre-cqi Sage 5 CF and bought a new one, super smooth.

Sounds good. What is CQI and where can I buy it?

Is there a way to tell the pre vs post CQI versions apart? Love my LW versions and always wanted a CF version, but the lack of the pivot bushing always put me off from getting a CF example.

CQI is Spyderco's term for an improvement made to a model mid-run. (I think it stands for constant quality improvement or something like that.) It's often difficult to know if you're purchasing a CQI model unless you have a knowledgeable salesperson who knows the difference, as the CQI'd specimens are not marked as such--they usually have some modification that makes them function better. So buy from a trusted source and ask before you buy, is my advice.

Excuse my ignorance, but I was trying to determine the differences between the Sage 5 and LW version when I found this post. I have a Para 3 LW and it is noticeably different compared to the Para 3 G-10, with the liners removed and the wire pocket clip added. The Sage 5 lightweight still has the liners and they both have the wire clip. I'm a bit confused by the Spyderco website because it states the weight difference of 13% but the specs show the Sage 5 at 88 grams and the LW at 82 grams. If they now both have the same bushing system, I don't see much of a difference. Is it mainly blade steels and scales at this point? I feel I must be missing something.

FTR, I have a LW with M4 blade and scales replaced with Parsons Bladeworks CF and it is amazing.

If the bushings are the same - which I din't know yet - then the scales and the 6 gramms weigh are the only differences. The CF version had different milling in the blade around the pivot. The lightweight name is a bit misleading.

The CF Sage 5 is my daily carry as of a few months ago. I loved it so much that I bought a second one while they were still around $130.

The action on both of mine are drop shut with zero blade play.

Add a CME by odc4edc and the Sage 5 LW is just simply amazing! Drops smooth consistently.659326B9-130C-4737-8EE1-5543BFB50256.jpeg

Can you post some pics, that sounds awesome!

Sorry, I don't have pics of the CF scales on because I bought a set of micarta ones from Parson's. The CF scales are a bit smooth for me and I don't really care for the look of standard CF weave. I'm debating on sending in the CF scales to Way of Knife to get a pattern milled into them to provide some extra traction.

The micarta looks great!
