Hello,

I do not have in stock sambar stag and I need to buy some. Do not have a tip where to buy the best quality? :)

Thanks !

Here's what I have recently learned about buying Sambar Stag; you need to buy it in person. I have purchased from the guy in the afore mentioned link and I have bought several pieces from Culpepper's. Stag is so widely varied in size and shape that even with all the dimensions and a photo or two, it still may not fit your needs. I have a half dozen pieces that won't fit the project I bought them for because something didn't work; size, shape, contour, texture, color, pith...

I had a few of those too. Definitely better to select in person if possible.

Yes, it's very difficult to judge stag via photos. I have gotten some good stuff from the seller linked from pictures, but it is risky when you're dealing with scales.

Tapers are much less difficult to judge from photos, and Tim (the guy that's on ebay now) takes quite good photos of these that should indicate any twist or curve. I actually bought quite a lot of stag from him a while back when he was getting rid of most of his inventory, but I was able to pick through it in person.

Prices are very high now as the exportation from India was banned, and supplies here in the US have dwindled heavily.

You being in Slovakia I can only assume there may be issues with importing, and of course shipping costs will push that even higher. I can only say though, that unless something changes, prices are only going to continue going up, and selection is only going to get smaller. Like fossil ivory, I buy as much as I can when I can, and I know there'll be a time where I'm reminiscing about the good ol days of being able to use stag and ivory.

I have bought some from that eBay guy and he is good about taking proper pictures. As for price, his are pretty much in line with other sellers these days, assuming that you can find other sellers. A number of our old regular sources no longer carry stag at all. The days of digging though the big Rubbermaid bins at the nice Indian couple's booth on Thursday afternoon at the Blade Show and paying $30-35 for big primo undyed bowie sized carvers is LONG gone. You might want to drop an e-mail to Henrik at Mermaid Knife Supplies in Denmark if he is still in Business. Even if he doesn't have any, he might be able to tell you who does have stag in the EU.
