I recently bought this Sandvik 3 1/2 (Michigan??) head and I know little to nothing about it other than it is very sharp with some mighty fine steel in it. I can’t find much on history or dating these. Could anyone pitch in with some history, info, or facts? Thanks!

I don't really know what to call these, they're kind of in between a Dayton and Michigan.
I have an old Gransfors Bruks of this same head pattern.
It just like my GB and many Wetterlings were the cheap imports of the 60's-70's and possibly into the 80's.
They're pretty decent Axes , but aren't exactly the premium fancy swedish boutique axes of today.

This was probably made by GB or wetterlings.

Thanks for the feedback, H&S. I got it for $20 (I thought that was a fair price). I was thinking there was a possibility it was made by Wetterlings. It’s one of my uses (mostly limbing).

A 1989 catalog lists the closest pattern to this as the 9551-3.5 Hickory shafted selling for $23.47 British pounds. Bit was painted Sandvik orange. The 9551 line was available in weights 2.5-5lbs, on 28-34" handles. 28" on the 2.5 3-4lbers on 32" handles. Everything above that on a 34".

Sadly steel type is only listed as "Sandvik". In the 72, 89, 91 catalogs they are much more interested in selling the 421 recreational line of axes and hatchets. Also the brush axe.

By 91, they seem to be phasing out the orange paint in favor of a black finish.

Thanks for the feedback, tltt. It has the remains of orange paint in spots, but on the underside of the poll and eye. I kind of thought it could have been painted after the fact. No black paint though.

Here's a 5lb Sandvik I picked up used about six years ago. Probably newer than yours.

It was suggested on here it was probably made by Helko seeing as it's "made in Germany".
It was also suggested if it had have had "made in Sweden" it could have been Wetterlings.

Nice looking resto/mod. Thanks for the feedback. It has a partial mark saying it was made in Sweden.
